AU Congratulates Al-Bashir On His Re-election As President

April 29, 2010 -- The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Jean Ping, congratulated the people of the Sudan on the peaceful conclusion of the national elections, which took place from 11th to 15th April 2010.

 He congratulated Omar Hassen al- Beshir on his re-election as president of Sudan and Salva Kiir Maryadit on his election as president of the government of Southern Sudan at this critical time ofdemocratic transformation of the country.
 The AU recognizes that the holding of the just concluded elections were an important milestone in the implementation of the comprehensive peace agreement (CPA), according to a press statement AU sent to ENA on Wednesday

It also reciognizes that the overall peaceful and orderly manner in which they were conducted will contribute immensely to the democratization process, despite isolated incidents and challenges, according to the statement.
The AU urges the National Congress Party, the Sudanese People Liberation Movement and the people to especially recommit themselves to addressing outstanding issues necessary for the full implementation of the CPA.
