Kenyan police have been involved in a fierce gun battle with militant Islamists in north-eastern Garissa County, leaving one officer wounded, a government spokesman has told the BBC.

The al-Shabab militants had ambushed the police near Yumbis town in Garissa County, Mwenda Njoka added.

He dismissed as propaganda al-Shabab's claim that at least 20 policemen were killed in the attack.

Al-Shabab is a Somalia-based group which has stepped up attacks in Kenya.

In April, it carried out a siege on Garissa University College and 148 people were killed.

Last week, the militants briefly seized control of Yumbis, about 100km (62 miles) east of Garissa town, and warned residents not to work with the government.

"You Can Replace Property, You Can’t Replace a Life": Voices of the Unheard in the Baltimore Streets

Democracy Now! reports from the streets of Baltimore, where an overnight curfew has taken effect following Monday’s riots sparked by the death of Freddie Gray, the 25-year-old African-American man who died of neck injuries suffered in police custody. Tuesday night, police in riot gear fired tear gas at hundreds of protesters who defied the curfew when it began at 10 p.m. At least 10 people were arrested. But overall, the Baltimore Police Department declared "the city is stable." Thousands of forces, including National Guard troops, have deployed throughout the city streets. Monday’s unrest led to more than 200 arrests, dozens of cars set on fire, and many buildings badly damaged. Democracy Now!'s Aaron Maté and videographer Hany Massoud speak with locals as they take part in both the clean-up effort and the continued protests over Freddie Gray's death.

Nagaland: Angry mob raids Dimapur Central Jail, lynches 35-year-old rape accused alleged to be ‘Bangladeshi infiltrator’

A mob in Nagaland barged into the Dimapur Central Jail on Thursday afternoon, dragged out a rape accused and lynched him. Police said the mob overpowered jail security, tied up the man and dragged him for seven kilometres, thrashing him along the way. By the end, he succumbed to his injuries.

Later in the evening, curfew was imposed in Dimapur town following incidents of arson. “The situation is grim. The rape accused is said to be an illegal Bangladeshi infiltrator,” Nagaland DGP L L Doungel, who rushed from Kohima to Dimapur, said. He added that a few arrests had been made.

The victim has been identified as 35-year-old Syed Farid Khan, a small-time trader who dealt in scrap and used motor cars. The incident triggered a backlash against Bangladeshi immigrants, with houses and shops run by them coming under attack.

Incidentally, the state has been in the grip of an agitation over the issue of illegal immigrants for the past two weeks.

According to reports, despite Section 144 being imposed in Dimapur since Wednesday evening, the Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) and some other local groups called a rally on Thursday to protest against the alleged rape. In the afternoon, a mob rushed to the jail, broke open the gates by overpowering the security personnel on duty. Khan was stripped, tied up and dragged to City Clock Tower area — being kicked and pelted with stones along the way.

Khan was accused of raping a student of a local women’s college on February 24. The NSF and other groups had earlier demanded that he should not be granted bail.

When police turned up to remove Khan’s body, the mob started pelting stones, injuring several personnel. The police then resorted to lathi charge and opened fire. The mob also set an Indian Reserve Battalion bus on fire.

The mob then headed to Purana Bazar area, where the rape-accused had his shop, and reportedly set several shops and houses on fire.

Nagaland Chief Minister T R Zeliang, who is in New Delhi, called up senior ministers and officers, following which a government statement was issued asking people to show restraint. As visuals of the lynching started doing the rounds, the state government requested the media not to share them — in a bid to prevent any more violence.

“Many ugly, objectionable pictures are already on social media, but the traditional media, which is available more widely, has been requested to be more sensitive and apply self censorship to help mitigate the possible ramifications,” the appeal read.

France security: Chechens arrested over alleged attack plan

France and freedom

Police in southern France have detained five Chechens on suspicion of preparing an attack, prosecutors say.

The arrests took place in Beziers and Saint-Jean-de-Vedas, near Montpellier.

They come as France remains on high alert following attacks in Paris that killed 17, including 12 at the offices of satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.

Four men charged with supporting Amedy Coulibaly, one of the gunmen behind the attacks, are due to appear in court in Paris later on Tuesday.

It is not known whether the arrest of the Chechens is connected to the attacks in Paris earlier this month.

One suspect was arrested in the city of Beziers and another four were detained near Saint-Jean-de-Vedas, according to local media.

Certain "products" were recovered during police searches, officials said, without giving further details. Unconfirmed reports said a stash of explosives was found.

Chechnya, a highly restive and predominantly Muslim region in Russia, has seen large demonstrations against cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad published by Charlie Hebdo last week.

First to face charges

Three days of attacks began in Paris on 7 January when brothers Cherif and Said Kouachi burst into the offices of Charlie Hebdo, killing 12 people.

Coulibaly killed four Jewish hostages on 9 January before being shot dead by police. He is also believed to have shot dead a policewoman the day before.
Lassana Bathily, who hid customers at the Jewish store from the gunman, is being awarded a French passport

The Paris prosecutor's office said the four men in court on Tuesday - the first to face charges in the Paris terror attacks - were suspected of providing logistical support to Coulibaly.

The men, aged 22 to 28, are expected to be placed under formal investigation.

They were among 12 people arrested in police raids on Friday. Three of the women detained in the raids were freed on Saturday and five people were released overnight on Tuesday.

Almost 15,000 extra police and troops have been mobilised to boost security across France since the Paris attacks.

Hundreds of soldiers are also being deployed across Belgium following a series of anti-terror raids and arrests.

Meanwhile, a Malian employee who helped shoppers during the supermarket siege by Coulibaly is due to receive French nationality on Tuesday.

Lassana Bathily, a 24-year-old Muslim, hid customers inside a basement cold store when the gunman stormed the shop and took people hostage.

He will receive a French passport at a ceremony in his honour after his application was fast-tracked.

It comes after a petition was circulated calling for him to be granted citizenship.

He has lived in France for nine years and applied for citizenship last year.

How the attacks unfolded (all times GMT)

Wednesday 7 January 10:30 - Two masked gunmen enter Charlie Hebdo offices, killing 11 people, including the magazine's editor. Shortly after the attack, the gunmen kill a police officer nearby.
11:00 - Police lose track of the men after they abandon their getaway car and hijack another vehicle. They are later identified as brothers Said and Cherif Kouachi.
Thursday 8 January 08:45 - A lone gunman shoots dead a policewoman and injures a man in the south of Paris. Gunman later identified as Amedy Coulibaly.
10:30 - The Kouachi brothers rob a service station near Villers-Cotterets, in the Aisne region, but disappear again.
Friday 9 January 08:30 - Police exchange gunfire with the Kouachi brothers during a car chase on the National 2 highway northeast of Paris.
10:00 - Police surround the brothers at an industrial building in at Dammartin-en-Goele, 35km (22 miles) from Paris.

An SUV driver who was accused of deliberately running down a Muslim teenager in a 'hate crime' has been charged with first-degree murder.

Ahmed H. Aden, 34, of Kansas City, was charged in Jackson County in the crash that killed Abdisamad Sheikh-Hussein, 15, outside a Somali community center.

The convenience store manager was seen driving the sport utility vehicle toward the teen as the boy got into a car Thursday evening.

Fatal: Ahmed H. Aden, 34, left, was charged in the crash that killed Abdisamad Sheikh-Hussein, 15, right,

A witness saw Hussein 'fly through the air' as the SUV hit him then ran over him.

His legs were nearly severed, and he later died in hospital from his wounds.

According to the witness, Aden crashed the SUV then got out of the vehicle with a knife.

Occupants of the car told officers they followed him and pointed him out to police.

One witness said the suspect swung what appeared to be a baseball bat at people, and another witness reported that Aden pulled out a handgun and said to 'Stay there' as he walked away.

However, Aden initially told authorities that he had lost control of his vehicle and struck the teen because he thought he looked like a man who'd threatened him several days earlier.

FBI spokeswoman Bridget Patton said: 'Federal agents are assisting in the investigation and have opened this matter as a federal civil rights investigation as a potential hate crimes violation.'

Patton said she could not release any information on why the case could be considered a hate crime, but Muslim leaders had called for such an investigation early Friday.

In the weeks before the crash, worshipers said they saw a black SUV painted with threatening messages at the center and cruising around a nearby shopping area.

Mohamed Ahmed, 13, of Kansas City said: 'One of the messages was 'Islam Is Worse Than Ebola.'

'I would have thought the police would have taken care of it, but they didn't,' he said.

But there was no mention of those incidents in court records and police didn't immediately comment on whether they're connected to the teen's death.

Slain Somali nurse moved family to women’s shelter, says its boss

Zahra Abdille, left, and her eldest son Faris.
By: Olivia Carville Staff Reporter, Katrina Clarke Staff Reporter, Published on Tue Dec 02 2014

A slain Toronto nurse fled a violent relationship to stay with her two young sons in a safe house while she tried to gain custody of her children last year, according to abused women’s centre Dr. Roz’s Healing Place.

On Saturday afternoon, Zahra Abdille, 43, and her sons, Faris, 13, and Zain, 8, were found dead in the same East York apartment they ran from last July, the centre’s executive director Roz Roach told the Star Tuesday.

Roach said the family stayed in the centre’s shelter for three weeks while Abdille battled for the custody of her children.

During her stay at the centre, the Toronto Public Health nurse went to court twice to fight for custody, but Abdille did not qualify for legal aid and could not afford a lawyer, Roach said.

When Abdille and her sons arrived at the centre on July 10, she told staff she was running away from a long-term violent relationship, Roach, who has a PhD in health and human sciences, said.

Abdille had escaped war-torn Somalia and arrived into Toronto in the late 1990s. She had no family in Canada, Roach said.

Roach says Abdille’s file Dr. Roz’s Healing Place states that she met her partner in 1997 and the couple married a year later in Toronto.

Roach said police would be collecting the Abdille family file from the centre Wednesday morning.

Valerie McRobie, the centre’s child advocate, worked closely with the family and said Abdille was “a very hands-on mother.”

“Her children’s happiness came first on top of everything else that was happening in her life,” McRobie said.

Abdille watched her son’s soccer games and was seen helping the boys with homework during their three-week stay, McRobie said. “She was trying really hard to keep herself and the boys safe and she was going through the legal process but coming up against a lot of roadblocks, she was getting so frustrated.”

McRobie said she can still remember the “bright smiles” of Faris and Zain.

“They always had smiles on their faces and they were happy, happy to be little boys,” she told the Star.

Roach said Abdille was also a “very private woman” who did not want the Somali community to know she was staying in the shelter.

“She was a nurse and she found coming to the shelter had a stigma about it. She didn’t want anyone to know,” Roach said.

The family stayed until July 23 when Roach said they moved into a downtown private rental.

The nurse was last seen at the centre earlier this year collecting mail she had redirected there while she was living in the shelter. Roach said Abdille told staff at the time “everything was going well.”

Roach feared Abdille may have been unable to afford rent in the city’s strained private market and been forced to return to her abusive partner, a situation many other clients from the centre had faced, she said.

“Some of the obstacles these women have to go through are unbelievable. She was devastated when she tried to get interim custody of the kids but she did not get it. For me personally, I get really angry at the system when these things happen,” Roach said.

According to Abdille’s file, which was read out to the Star over the phone, staff at the Ontario Court of Justice on Sheppard Ave. told the nurse she did not qualify for legal aid and that she should speak to a student lawyer for further advice.

She was also told by the court that she needed to provide additional documents, such as income tax returns and receipts for daycare and school camps before her application would be processed, her file states.

“Zahra was a wonderful human being and her sons were two bright boys who we had hope for,” she said.

Faris Abdille was in Grade 8 at Westwood Middle School and principal Marc Sprack told the Star he loved skateboarding and drawing and had an “infectious smile.”

“We’re having a hard time here trying to make sense of a very difficult situation,” Sprack said Tuesday.

Zain Abdille was attending William Burgess elementary, Faris’ old school. Shane Colby, 10, said Faris, who was three years older than him at William Burgess, was always nice to the younger kids and even protected Shane when he was being bullied at school.

“He was a really good guy. He was one of the reasons I could go to Grade 1 feeling safe,” Shane said.

Faris, whose nickname was Faris Wheel, would stand beside Shane when older boys were tying to bully him; the pair would also trade hockey cards, he said.

“He also did really nice things for other people,” Shane said. He’d race the younger students and let them win, “so they could feel like winners.”

“He’s just a great person and life wouldn’t be the same without him. It’s just really sad that he has to go away,” Shane said.

Shane’s mother, Nancy Adderley-Colby, said all the younger boys adored Faris. He graduated from William Burgess after Grade 5, but would come back to the school to visit Zain.

“Just even a few months ago, I went to pick up the kids and there is this buzz of excitement because Faris is there and he’s got this swarm of younger kids around him and he’s playing with them,” Adderley-Colby said.

Both Faris and Zain attended the Danforth Ave. Pat Schulz Child Care Centre as toddlers, director Kristi Bovaconti said.

“They were that family that reached out and wanted to talk to you and tell you how much they appreciate everything you’re doing for them,” Bovaconti said. “They just loved being here.”

In the years following, Abdille regularly kept in touch with Bovaconti — the two women spoke just a week ago. Abdille sounded like her upbeat self, Bovaconti said.

“She was just really happy and friendly and just a lovely, lovely person,” Bovaconti said.

Toronto police remain tight-lipped about a possible connection between a man who fell to his death from a bridge over the Don Valley Parkway and the triple homicide. Policediscovered the bodies of Abdille and her two sons a few hours after finding the man’s body.

On Tuesday afternoon, Toronto police Const. Clint Stibbe said traffic services have not yet identified the man.

A paedophile doctor who abused young cancer patients has been sentenced to 22 years in jail.
Myles Bradbury, 41, of Herringswell in Suffolk, admitted abusing 18 children in his care at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge, between 2009 and 2013.
Bradbury has admitted 25 offences, including sexual assault, voyeurism and possessing more than 16,000 indecent images.
The judge told him his offences were a "gross and grotesque breach of trust".
Victims' lawyer Renu Daly: "This has been a traumatic and devastating time"
Sentencing him at Cambridge Crown Court, Judge Gareth Hawkesworth said: "In many years' experience on the bench, I have never come across a more culpable or grave course of sexual criminality which has involved such a gross and grotesque breach and betrayal of your Hippocratic Oath and trust reposed in you by your patients, their families and colleagues."
Bradbury's actions amounted to a "prolonged, carefully planned, cruel and persistent campaign of abuse" he said.
The judge told Bradbury, a blood cancer specialist who was arrested in December 2013, he had no doubt he had caused psychological harm to his victims and was at risk of doing so in future.

In September, he pleaded guilty to six counts of sexual assault and 13 counts of engaging in sexual activity with a child.
Bradbury also admitted three counts of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, one count of voyeurism and two counts of making indecent images of a child.

Analysis
Dr Myles Bradbury
By Julian Sturdy, BBC East investigations editor
He was a charming intellectual with a grotesque secret.
Myles Bradbury hid his depravity from everyone. No-one suspected a thing - not even his wife, his hospital colleagues or worshippers at his local church.
But the consultant also fitted the profile of a paedophile - someone who goes out of his way to get access to children. His choice of profession, and his decision to work in an African AIDS orphanage.
He's lost a £100,000 career, his wife has separated from him, taking their new child with her.
He only answered "no comment" in police interviews. So we may never know how many boys he molested.
His greatest claim to fame was that he once met the Queen. Now he will be detained at her pleasure for a very long time.

Bradbury had used a spy pen to take pictures of his victims.
It contained 170,425 images of "boys partially clothed... none indecent", the court heard.

The images of his victims, some of whom had haemophilia, leukaemia and other serious illnesses, were gathered at Addenbrooke's Hospital.
The hospital's chief executive, Dr Keith McNeil, said: "Our thoughts today are with our patients and families who were victims of Bradbury's shocking and cynical abuse.
"Today's sentencing of Bradbury cannot undo the damage he caused but he is finally behind bars and is no longer a risk to vulnerable children.
"The lengthy sentence shows Bradbury's abhorrent betrayal and manipulation of his position as a doctor has been fully recognised."
Victims' 'bravery'
As well as sentencing him to 22 years, Judge Hawkesworth said Bradbury would be placed on the sex offenders register for life and also made subject of a sexual offences prevention order for life.
Bradbury must serve half his prison sentence before being released on licence, the judge said.

The Crown Prosecution Service for the East of England (CPS) described Bradbury's abuse of his patients as "one of the worst cases of a breach of trust" it had prosecuted.
Michelle Brown, head of the CPS Rape and Serious Sexual Offences Unit (RASSO), said: "This paedophile doctor took advantage of his young patients battling serious illness by systematically sexually abusing them. Such cruelty is unimaginable to most of us."
Det Supt Gary Ridgway, from Cambridgeshire Police, said: "This case has understandably caused distress to many people.
"Bradbury was highly respected and revered by the families of his victims who trusted him implicitly but he betrayed that trust in an appalling way, by carrying out examinations purely for his own sexual gratification."
Reacting to the sentence, the parents of one victim said: "We're very happy... it may be over for him but it's not for us."
Another mother said: "I'm very pleased - he's got what he deserved."
Mr Ridgeway paid tribute to the victims and their families, saying they showed "great bravery in coming forward and ensuring Bradbury was held to account".

Five Afghan men convicted of gang-raping four women have been executed in a case that sparked national outrage.
Officials say the men were hanged at Pul-e-Charkhi prison east of Kabul. A sixth man convicted of unrelated crimes was also hanged.
The authorities ignored last-minute appeals for clemency from rights groups who said the convictions were unsafe.
Violence against women in Afghanistan is rife but correspondents say cases rarely attract this much attention.
Many Afghans had demanded the death penalty. Correspondents say that given public opinion, there was little chance of the sentences not being carried out.

"The court's verdict has been implemented and all the convicts have been executed - five from the Paghman case, plus Habib Istalifi, who was head of a notorious kidnapping gang," the attorney general's chief-of-staff Atta Mohammad Noori told AFP news agency.
Former President Hamid Karzai signed the death warrants on his last day in office. There was no word from new President Ashraf Ghani, who took over in September.
The 23 August rapes took place at night at a popular picnic spot in Paghman district near Kabul as the women were returning to the capital with their families from a wedding.
The attackers - armed and some dressed in police uniforms - tied up the men in the group and dragged the women from their cars before raping them.
There was a chorus of outrage. Many campaigners in Afghanistan - where women who are raped sometimes find themselves accused of adultery and punished - even wanted the executions to go ahead, correspondents say.

But critics say the legal process was rushed - the televised trial took only two hours. One defendant said he had been tortured into confessing.
The UN's High Commissioner for Human Rights expressed "grave concerns" that hanging the men would not deliver justice to them or their victims. International human rights groups also criticised Mr Karzai for calling for the men to be hanged even before they were tried.
Amnesty International called the hangings an "affront to justice".
The five were originally sentenced to death for armed robbery along with two other men. The other two, who were not convicted of rape, later had their death sentences commuted to life in prison.
In a separate case, police said they had been pursuing Habib Istalifi, the sixth man to be hanged for crimes unconnected to the gang rape, for the past 10 years.
"He was head of a major crime gang involved in several cases of kidnapping and armed robbery," Hashmat Stanekzai, a Kabul police spokesman, told the BBC. "He was involved in several murders of vehicle drivers."
Capital punishment is relatively rare in Afghanistan.
Since the Taliban were ousted in 2001, hundreds of people have been sentenced to death but Mr Karzai signed warrants for the execution of just 30, BBC correspondents say.

Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta has appeared before the International Criminal Court (ICC) where he faces charges of crimes against humanity.
He is the first serving head of state to come before the court in The Hague.
He was called to appear at the ICC "status conference" when the prosecution said evidence needed to go ahead with a trial was being withheld.
The charges - which Mr Kenyatta denies - concern his alleged role in violence following the 2007 elections.

The BBC's Anna Holligan in The Hague says there were chaotic scenes as Mr Kenyatta arrived at the ICC, where a large crowd was waiting.
The ICC wants him to explain allegations that evidence against him had been withheld by the Kenyan government - a claim rejected by Kenyan Attorney-General Githu Muigai, who appeared before the court on Tuesday.

Uhuru Kenyatta cuts a composed figure in court. He sits back, occasionally glancing at his "first family"' on the front row of the public gallery. He is wearing a patriotic bracelet in the Kenyan colours. Never has there been a more glamorous audience in attendance. Pink and yellow headscarves and gold earrings punctuate the mostly grey suited public space, bringing some colour to the dark period of Kenyan history that is the subject of this hearing.
The president temporarily relinquished power to come to The Hague. Nevertheless, his convoy received a presidential welcome. Flag-waving crowds surged as his police-escorted car pulled up. International TV crews jostled to get him in their frame.
This trial is testing the limits of international justice. The prosecution says Kenya is not co-operating by handing over evidence. Kenya says that if they do not have the evidence, the charges must be thrown out. The ICC was partly designed to demonstrate that even the most powerful leaders cannot be above the law. Regardless of whether Uhuru Kenyatta is guilty or innocent, one thing he has proved is that it is extremely challenging to prosecute a president.

Scores of Mr Kenyatta's supporters packed the public gallery as the hearing got under way.
Defence lawyer Steven Kay said Mr Kenyatta would not be making a statement. He said the government had co-operated with the prosecution requests where it was possible to do so.
The hearing was later adjourned.
The prosecution has accused the Kenyan government of failing to hand over potentially crucial pieces of evidence, as Anna Holligan reports
ICC chief prosecutor Fatou Bensouda, who is from The Gambia, said there was still a significant "body of evidence" against Mr Kenyatta.
The prosecution, which wants an indefinite adjournment, told the court it had phone data and nine witnesses who were willing to testify how Mr Kenyatta had funding links with the Mungiki sect which took part in the violence.
Fergal Gaynor, a lawyer for the victims, said they were entitled to know why witnesses for the prosecution had withdrawn from the case.
In September, the court postponed the trial after prosecutors said the Kenyan government had failed to deliver key documents.

On Monday, the president again stressed his innocence, saying his conscience was clear.
In a speech to the Kenyan parliament, Mr Kenyatta said that he was going to The Hague in a personal capacity - not as president of the country - so as not to compromise the sovereignty of Kenyans.
No special arrangements have been made at the ICC. The main spokesperson for the court said that Mr Kenyatta would not be treated differently from any other accused person.
Earlier, former ICC chief prosecutor Luis Moreno Ocampo conceded that the trial "was not working well" but welcomed Mr Kenyatta's appearance as "showing African commitment to change".
Mr Kenyatta was elected in 2013, despite facing charges. Analysts said he turned the prosecution to his advantage, portraying it as foreign intervention in Kenya's domestic affairs.

Mr Kenyatta faces five charges relating to the ethnic massacres - the worst violence in Kenya since independence in 1963. Tens of thousands of people were displaced and Kenya's reputation for stability was tarnished.
Mr Kenyatta was a close ally of President Mwai Kibaki, who was declared the winner of the 2007 election. Mr Kibaki's rival, Raila Odinga, claimed the poll was marred by fraud.
The dispute took on an ethnic dimension, pitting members of the Kikuyu ethnic group of Mr Kenyatta and Mr Kibaki against other communities. Mr Kenyatta is accused of organising an ethnic Kikuyu gang, the Mungiki sect, to attack rival groups.
Deputy President Ruto also faces charges at The Hague, but he was on Mr Odinga's side during the violence. He also denies the charges.
