Condolences to Lord Avebury.

These condolences to Lord Avebury are written on behalf of the Somaliland nation and its diaspora.

Somaliland found a friend in the Houses of Parliament not very long ago.  This friend, Lord Avebury, was a hardworking and kind member of the House of Lords. His contributions to Somaliland's development of human rights, the rule of law and democracy in the Horn of Africa have played a major role in shaping the future of this young nation.

The people of Somaliland are sending their heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Lord Avebury. A great friend has departed from the people of Somaliland and their diaspora. Lord Avebury has opened the doors of politics for the country through campaigning for its recognition. Every journey starts with one step, and Lord Avebury walked with us toward achieving Somaliland's goals of democracy and nation building.

The first meeting with the government of Somaliland was held at his office, with the former Foreign Minister of Somaliland, Her Excellency Dr. Edna  Adan Ismail and the former Minister of Commerce and Industry, His Excellency Eng. Mohamed Hashi Elmi. The outcome of this meeting was to enable the government's former president, His Excellency Dahir Rayale Kahin, to give a speech at the House of Parliament and to introduce Somaliland's case to the honourable members of the House of Commons. This was a great triumph for the country's people who now feel that they have a voice in the House of Parliament and that the world is now listening. The diaspora was excited to be welcomed to the House of Parliament, along with being able to witness this great occasion.

To keep the momentum going, Lord Avebury helped the Somaliland diaspora campaign through the All Party Parliamentary Groups for Somaliland, to help the country improve its humanitarian needs. A fact finding mission of the parliamentarians was sent to Somaliland to assess what was required.  Following that, Somaliland took a bold initiative to strengthen the rule of law and democracy in the Horn of Africa.  They held their first parliamentary elections in 2005 which created a sense of excitement in the country's diaspora and communities. For the first time in the history of Africa, Somaliland created their own democracy within the nation by combining traditional pastoral democracy with liberal democratic values.  As a result of this Somaliland was nicknamed Africa's best kept secret.

Somaliland's youth and home grown democracy are always under constant threat from external factors, such as extremism and influence from radical groups, funded by foreign powers determined to destabilise this region.  As a result of this the youth feel vulnerable and some people have started to migrate to seek better opportunities. Strengthening Somaliland's democracy in the Horn is a key factor to combat these external forces.

Lord Avebury supported the Somaliland government and diaspora to help lobby for the recognition of the country and to join the Commonwealth nations. He has helped community health projects including the Somaliland Hargeisa Hospital Group, led by Mr Mohamed Hussein Abby and also the Edna Adan Maternity Hospital founded by the former Foreign Minister of Somaliland, Her Excellency Dr Edna Adan Ismail.

Somaliland's democracy went from strength to strength when a historical election took place in 2010. For the first time a candidate from the opposition party won the presidential election electing His Excellency Ahmed Mohamed Mohamoud Silanyo. The election was free and fair as witnessed by the international observers. Lord Avebury called this election a triumph for Somaliland.

The next stage was to empower Somaliland's economic development.  Lord Avebury played a vital role in reaching this target. He worked tirelessly with friends of the nation in the All Party Parliamentary Group for Somaliland(APPG).  In 2010, Somaliland's development corporation was launched in the House of Parliament to help create investment opportunities.

Lord Avebury had a special connection with young people and he inspired young British citizens, with Somaliland origins, by educating them about the importance of the parliament's work in human rights and health. In these areas he linked the connection between education, history and politics.

Lord Avebury's door was always open to the Somaliland Community, and he always took time out of his busy schedule to support its cause for human rights, recognition, democracy and nation building. We would like to thank Lord Avebury for what he has done for the people of Somaliland, and extend our gratitude to his loving family. A great man has departed from the people of Somaliland, and we will miss him dearly.

Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman has pledged to continue the current policies of the government, to ensure stability and unity in the country.
In a speech following the death of King Abdullah on Friday, King Salman also urged the nation’s citizens to pledge their allegiance to new Crown Prince Muqrin and to the new deputy crown prince and second deputy premier, Muhammad bin Naif.
“We will continue by the grace of Allah and His strength to cling to the right path followed by the state since its inception by the founder, the late King Abdul Aziz and his sons after him. We will never deviate from it because our constitution is the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Prophet, peace be upon him,” King Salman said.
The king commended the service of King Abdullah to the nation, the wider Muslim community and the Arab world. He also asked Allah to help him with this “great trust” of the monarchy, to guide him onto the right path and avoid “falsehood.”
Quoting from the Qur’an to highlight the transience of life, he said that everyone on earth would perish and have to face their Creator. With a heart “filled with grief and sadness,” he extended condolences to the “loyal Saudi people and the Arab and Islamic ummah” on the death of King Abdullah.
He said King Abdullah had spent his entire life trying to follow the precepts of God, “strengthening his religion, serving his nation and people, and defending the causes of the Arab and Islamic” world. “Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return,” the king said.
King Salman also urged Arabs and Muslims to seek solidarity in the face of the challenges currently confronting them. He said this would be the policy of Saudi Arabia as it moves to tackle obstacles facing it.


“We will continue in this country, which Allah has honored by choosing it as the platform for His message and the Qibla (direction in which Muslims pray), to boost unity and defend our nation’s causes.” He said the Kingdom would be guided by the teachings of Islam, a religion of “peace, mercy and moderation.”
“I ask Allah to guide me to serve our dear people, realize their hopes, preserve our country and nation’s security and stability, and to protect it from all evil. He is able to do that, there is no strength except with Allah,” the king said.

World leaders react to King Abdullah's death


RIYADH: World leaders paid tribute to Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah on Friday, praising the late ruler as a key mediator between Muslims and the West.
US President Barack Obama said he and Abdullah, whose country has for decades been a strategic ally of Washington, had enjoyed a “genuine and warm friendship.”
Russian President Vladimir Putin hailed Abdullah, who died in a Riyadh hospital earlier the same day, as a “wise politician.”
Iran sent condolences to the Saudi people and announced its foreign minister would travel to Riyadh for an “official ceremony” this weekend.
Abdullah, who officially took power in 2005, guided the Kingdom through a turbulent decade in the region, with neighbors Iraq and Yemen wracked with insecurity after the 2011 Arab Spring uprisings and the growth of Islamic radicalism.
French President Francois Hollande said Abdullah’s vision of “a fair and durable peace in the Middle East remains truer than ever.”
Canada’s Prime Minister Stephen Harper praised the late king as “an ardent defender of peace.”
And the foreign ministry in Spain hailed Abdullah as “a respected figure throughout the Middle East for his willingness to help resolve conflicts.”
In London, Prime Minister David Cameron said the Saudi ruler would be remembered for “his commitment to peace and for strengthening understanding between faiths.”
Prince Charles of Wales is to travel to Riyadh as The Queen’s representative to pay his respects, the royal’s office said.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Abdullah’s rule had been “fair and moderate,” praising him for aiding “dialogue between the Muslim world and the West.”
In the Middle East, Lebanon, which has close ties with Riyadh, spoke of losing “a defender and a partner” who had stood by Beirut “in difficult times.”
Tunisia’s President Beji Caid Essebsi said the king “ensured... support for causes of justice, peace and development in the Arab, Muslim and entire world.”
His country joined Algeria and Mauritania in announcing three days of mourning, while Cairo said its official grieving would run for a whole week.
Several leaders cut short overseas trips to travel to Riyadh and pay their respects.
Jordan’s King Abdallah II left the World Economic Forum in Davos, organizers said, before declaring 40 days of mourning for the late Saudi king.
Israeli President Reuven Rivlin praised Abdullah as an “exemplary leader... with sound judgment.”
Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas declared three days of mourning, describing the late monarch as a “sage.”
“With much sadness, we received the news of the death of King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz, a loss to the Arab and Islamic world,” Abbas said in a statement.
President Recip Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey said Abdullah had contributed “to strengthening cooperation and solidarity in the Muslim world, especially concerning the Palestinian question and the situation in Syria.”
At the Asian Cup in Australia, the national football team of the United Arab Emirates donned black armbands for their match against Japan.
Malaysian Prime Minister Rajib Razak called Abdullah a “great leader for his initiative for inter-religious dialogue,” and Afghan President Ashraf Ghani pointed to Saudi involvement in his country’s peace negotiations.
Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim country, paid tribute to a man who “brought prosperity and reforms to his nation.”

Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah died on Friday following a short illness. Crown Prince Salman has been named the new king with Prince Muqrin crown prince, according to a Royal Court statement.
King Abdullah was hospitalized in December suffering from pneumonia and had been breathing with the aid of a respirator.
King Salman said King Abdullah died at 1 a.m. on Friday. “With deep sorrow we announce the death of King Abdullah,” said the new king in the statement issued by the Royal Court, adding that the funeral prayers would take place after Asr prayer at Imam Turki bin Abdullah Mosque in Riyadh on Friday.
King Salman and Crown Prince Muqrin will receive the oath of allegiance from the people of Saudi Arabia at his palace in Riyadh after Isha prayer.
The smooth succession indicates stability in Saudi Arabia, according to observers.
Since the death in 1952 of King Abdul Aziz, the founder of Saudi Arabia, the throne has systematically passed down to his sons.
King Salman, credited with transforming Riyadh during his half-century as governor, has a reputation for austerity, hard work and discipline.
Born on Dec. 31, 1935, King Salman is the 25th son of King Abdul Aziz. He was appointed governor of Riyadh province at the age of 20. He was appointed minister of defense in 2011.

Saudi Arabian King Salman has pledged continuity, hours after his accession to the throne following the death of his half-brother, King Abdullah.

The new king moved swiftly to appoint heirs and ministers, including one prince from the ruling dynasty's third generation.

King Abdullah died overnight, weeks after being admitted to hospital with a lung infection.

He was buried in an unmarked grave in Riyadh, following Friday prayers.

His burial was conducted in line with the traditions of Wahhabism - the ultra-conservative form of Sunni Islam followed by the kingdom - where funerals are austere and simple.

King Abdullah's body was wrapped in a shroud and taken by ambulance to the Imam Turki bin Abdullah mosque in Riyadh.

Following prayers, which were attended by Gulf heads of state as well as foreign leaders including Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, his body was taken to a public cemetery and buried.

'Correct policies'

Within hours of acceding to the throne of the oil-rich kingdom, King Salman, 78, vowed to maintain the same policies as his predecessors.

"We will continue adhering to the correct policies which Saudi Arabia has followed since its establishment," he said in a speech broadcast on state television.

The new king's profile was updated on his official Twitter account, where he wrote: "I ask God to help me succeed in my service of the dear [Saudi] people."

He named another of King Abdullah's half-brothers, Muqrin, who is in his late 60s, as the new crown prince.

Interior Minister Prince Mohammed bin Nayef, 55, was appointed deputy crown prince, making him second in line to the throne and effectively smoothing the line of succession for years to come.

Death is a harsh and fearful reality faced by everyone who lives. No one has the power to avoid it, nor does anyone around the dying person have the ability to prevent it. It is something, which happens every moment and is encountered by the old and the young, the rich and the poor, the strong and the weak. They are all the same because there is no plan or means of escaping it, no power, no means of intercession, no way to prevent it, nor to delay it, which shows that indeed it comes from One having tremendous power - so that the human is helpless in this regard and can only submit to it.

"And we granted not to any human being immortality before you (O Muhammad), then if you die, would they live forever? Everyone is going to taste death, and We shall make a trial of you with evil and with good, and to Us you will be returned."

I hear and feel you Ahmed,my uncle,inadeer,my mentor, my awoowo. it was so therapeutic that you shared the burial ritual. I thought alhamdulilah he died prepared for his lord and creator and I feel confident his abode is a better one. The pain remains with us though.
I'm not sure what to do or how to handle it . I accept the preordained yet I can't help to break down I keep saying ouch,ouch, aha feeling such immense pain that will not go away even though I accept my mind and heart grieve deeply and are not settling. I admire Amal and Najaat for their strong imam and for their courage and bravery . Alhamdullahi for your wonderful family who assisted you.

What a remarkable young man, courageous,brave spared you pain he is definitely in jannah Inshallah. I am sure you wanted to share the pain with him even though you wouldn't be able take it away from him but rest assured he is the people of jannah and it was meant to be this way cannot be changed and couldn't change prior. Subhanalah to endure such, pain no medication. I cannot imagine. He had the character of someone with sound spirituality the sabr and endurance and the shukr are truly those of strong faith. I saw him last December happy,bubbly joker,. You raised him to be a true man. Do not doubt yourself for 1 minute Ahmed, you did a remarkable job. This is a test for you now. A remarkable young man with deep conviction of his creator. Rest assured any other fish and chips would not have prepared himself in such manner,they would lose their heads or be suicidal at best. I just saw another picture of him and the girls and I broke down. I cry as I write.

Ahmed adeero,friend,confidant, coach,nurture strength of spirit in the sudden event of misfortune . Mohamed was everything a son could be. No one could wish for better child, alhamdulilah he was an example and will continue to be. Your deep affirming faith, Amal's courage, in this time of trial. Say Alhamdullahi, his departature from this world was in the best way.it is said in a hadith related the one who drowns,the one who dies of abdomen disease are shaheed in Islam rest, be assured it was his time and he spared you pain manshallah. It is a test for you. You must imagine his abode is in jannah . In another hadith it is said that charity eases the suffering of death and relieves the wrath of Allah. We hope this is the case through the kindness he showed his parents.

I remember and know Mohamed so well almost like you do, he was an extension of my own brother Mohamed and my nephew Hassan. In fact he is right between them and the love I have for him is a mixture of the love I have for those 2. His smile and his pleasant mannerisms. His sharp intellectual, mind so on point. His impeccable character, quiet yet social. I make dua from my heart. I have being making dua since his death and have shared the story with all my friends. They made dua for him at our local madrassa. Not a day has gone by that I have not remembered him since that day. I called my mum again today ( as I do do everyday since Mohamed's death) and she had to tell me to stop she could not bear it herself. In the words of Samia Ali Muna she said crying he was so strong and solid.

I have known him since childhood we are such close family. Do not feel guilt you raised him to be a man. You for filed you duty towards him. Yes you were away but you have to remember the strength,the spirit came from both you and his mum. Even if you were present,you cannot deter death, you think you would have just enjoyed the moment together but who knows if you would have. This was the way it was to be.

His character was that of those promised Jannah. He was kind and gentle like Abu bakr, brave and courage of Ali ibn Talib (RA) As hardworking as Uthhman bin Affan. Subhanallah the bravery is an example to all. Perhaps even his physique and appearance were that of Umar bin Khattab. Fearless and a lion heart like Hamza (RA). I am proud to have known him. In contemporary language he was a " man's man. The exemplary manner in which he cared for his mum he was her everything may Allah reward him immensly and may Allah comfort her grieving heart. May Allah increase her iman and mend her heart she truly lost a remarkable son." Jannah lies at the feet of the Mother. "

I remember him as far back as when he was a child, and then again on your return in the 90's. Every time I saw him always joking in a kaftan manner with his Sharpe wit about him. I remember me aunt Amina Omar go against him in our jokes yet he would not be defeated. He always had the upper hand. He died in a beautiful way and the pain he endured was inshallah expiration of sins but don't let the fact that you were absent torment you. The only thing you would have achieved would be to share the last moment.Allah is now testing you continue to make dua knowing you truly raised an amazing human being and that there was no negligence on your part at all. He dignified and respected you both manshallah.

I am sorry as a son he was obliged to show you dedication and had you pampered him maybe he wouldn't have conducted himself in the way he did for sure his sins are forgiven. As for you as parents you wanted him to be successful and he was. I am sure Allah rewarded him. If there were any shortcomings( which I doubt) on your part may Allah forgive you and may you meet in Jannah. We parent the best way we know. I don't think he felt you didn't show him love.

This is the way we are. As children we want to please we don't expect that back. We feel we have to for fill your commands. You were fortunate to have that. I am sure he understood very well that you always had his best interest at heart trust me on that. Please continue try to execute what you can of the plans you shared (only if you can may Allah give you the strength). Allah is pleased with him b/c you are. Your job is done. He is in Jannah. Make dua for his son to be a pious,righteous son who will continue his father and grandfather 's legacy manshallah. One that will continue to make dua for his righteous father and be obdient to Allah. I hope you will see him grow, mold and shape him to be Khalifa of his dad and also share stories of of his father in the future. Mohamed will remain in our hearts forever. Ahmed make dua for us that we are able to rise to the challenges of this world so we can rest in janatal Farduusa alla. I hope.

Please Ahmed you are a great man though I never wrote back to you. I read all your posts. I share a lot of your blogs with my colleagues and the principal of our school. I constantly talk about you to all I know. Please rise to the challenge and let not guilty consume you. Mohamed would not want you to be consumed by guilt. Just like he supported you now he would not want to see his father feel guilt. Thank for sharing the burial that healed me knowing he had a beautiful departure. Continue to make dua. Thank you for life lessons. Pray that I am able to fufill obligations of my creator and that we all meet him in the best state. Ameen Ya Rab . His ending will continue to heal my pain, but the life lessons I learned are what will be my departure? What will it be like ? How will I prepare myself and my own boys for the inevitable journey that we will all take ?
Everyone will taste death Allah clearly states that let as take lessons from the Quran and Sunnah. Look at the seerah. The year of sadness for the Prophet (SAW) when hhis wife and uncle died.

Consider yourself fortunate for all these blessing and Jazkallah kheiran for sharing life lessons. I hope I benefit immensely from this. This is a lesson for all to look at our inner self and truly contemplate. Ahmed, Adeer/Abti we share your grieve. He was no ordinary son a righteous son who dignified and respected his parents in the highest regard. Of course you will mourn and reflect on the fond memories.
