LAS ANOD — A lorry driver was among three killed in a horrific accident in Sool region on Sunday when his truck rolled over.
It is understood the lorry experienced a tread separation on one of his tires causing the driver to veer out of control, crash and rollover in the town of Higlada.
Locals said injured passengers were taken to hospitals in Las Anod. Medical staff at Manhal hospital reported that they were treating six people including three in a serious condition. The tree killed in the horror crash were buried in Las Anod in the same day.
The lorry left Garowe in Somalia on Saturday and was bound for Hargeisa, Somaliland.
Meanwhile, a family in Borama are mourning the death of Qartin-Halwo Barkhadle Dugsiye, in her 60s, after she was killed in a crash that involved a police car in the city center. According to Ahmed Dahir Hersi, traffic officer, the vehicle lost control and crashed into a market stall that also injured two others, a man and a woman. He blamed the poor infrastructure in the country which failed to clearly divide roads– pedestrian walkways, shops and homes.
Road traffic accidents have became increasingly a serious public health problem and major headache for the government in Somaliland in the last four years. The traffic department blamed the increase in number of vehicles, the existing poor road network and bad drivers for the mayhem.
Again the department points out the fact that there are no divisions of traffic among the various transport modes including animals, pedestrians and vehicles.
The traffic department says all these are some of the causes of Somaliland’s growing traffic nightmares. Ordinary citizens have called on the government to do something about the problem but Hargeisa says it lacks the financial resources needed. The least the government can do is deploy more traffic officers, create divide lines and ban the importation of vehicles that are not fit for usage (any thing more than 10 years old), including bad spare parts.
