Vile acts: David Bye, who admitted raping an eight-year-old girl, has been jailed indefinitely

A paedophile who admitted raping an eight-year-old girl was jailed indefinitely yesterday - despite the fact his victim has not been identified.

David Bye, 43, enticed the girl into his holiday caravan where he took a series of photographs of him abusing her.

A court heard how the father of one was only caught after taking his work laptop to be repaired.

An IT firm found 17,000 indecent images of children aged six to 12 - including many in the most serious 'level five' category of child pornography - and called police.

Detectives then raided Bye's caravan in mid-Wales where they found a digital camera containing 202 pictures of Bye abusing ten children, including the eight-year-old girl.

Bye - described in court as 'a predatory paedophile and sexual pervert' - admitted raping the girl. He also admitted five charges of possessing indecent photographs and four of taking indecent pictures of a child.

Prosecutor Ieuan Morris told Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court, in South Wales: 'This is perhaps a unique case because the acts are against an unknown girl. Bye photographed himself secretly raping her but only he knows the identity of his victim.

'Only Bye knows whether this young girl was drugged or heavily sedated.'

He described how Bye targeted young, vulnerable single parents to get close to their children.

'He was devious and manipulative,' Mr Morris said. 'His motive was quite sinister - to gain access to the children through the parent.

'Under the guise of being a friendly and charming man with a sympathetic ear he turned his attention to their children.

'He groomed one girl by giving her chocolates and crisps. He bought another girl a bicycle and gave a young boy a remote-controlled car and model aeroplane.'

Bye, who was working as an accountant in Reading at the time of his arrest, admitted to police that he had harboured a 'deep-seated sexual craving' for children.

Mr Morris said: 'That craving still continues. Bye has disturbingly expressed a view that he has nothing to lose by further exploiting girls in this way because his fate is already sealed.'

Sentencing Bye, Judge Eleri Rees said: 'Over 12 years you developed an obsession with viewing images of pre-pubescent girls which has escalated into taking photos.

'Despite your admissions, you have not assisted police in identifying the children you abused. We cannot assume they are blissfully unaware of what occurred.

'It may only be as they mature and grow older that they reflect on what happened and realised they were sexually abused.'

Bye, of Harrow, North-West London, was told he will remain in prison for at least five years but the judge stressed there was no guarantee he would ever be considered safe for parole.

He was also ordered to sign the Sex
