Former US health secretary designate Thomas Daschle has withdrawn his nomination to the job after his tax evasion scandal continued to stir up trouble.

US President Barack Obama agreed to Daschle's decision to pull out, admitting he 'screwed up' with his selection of Tom Daschle to chair the health and human services department, AFP reported.

Daschle, a former South Dakota senator, failed to pay over 100,000 dollars in taxes for having a chauffeur and private car before campaigning for Obama.

Also on Tuesday, Nancy Killefer, Obama's pick for the new post of chief performance officer, who is to facilitate restructuring the federal budget, left the new US government over her failure to pay back taxes.

Commenting on the departure of Tom Daschle and Nancy Killefer, White House spokesperson Robert Gibbs said that the controversies over some of Obama's selections could undermine the president's attempt to set a high standard for moral principles in his administration.

"You can't set an example of responsibility but set a different standard in who serves," Gibbs noted.

Last month New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson, Obama's choice for commerce secretary, was forced to leave the president's team after an investigation alleged his involvement in 'politicized state government contracting practices.'
