Turkey to sponsor all Gaza children who lost their fathers in latest war

The Turkish Red Crescent Society announced on Monday that it would sponsor all the Palestinian orphans who lost their fathers in the latest Israeli war on the Gaza Strip.


While in the office of the Palestinian minister of social affairs, the director of the Turkish Red Crescent in Gaza Arda Tarhan said to journalists: "We are here to sign the protocol for a project to distribute Zakat funds for 1905 orphans whose fathers were killed in the recent Israeli war."

Tarhan said that the implementation of this project would be in cooperation with the Palestinian ministry of social affairs, noting that each orphan would receive $102 each month.

Deputy Social Affairs Minister Yousef Ibrahim said that this money would lessen the suffering of the children who lost their fathers.

According to the ministry, the latest Israeli war on Gaza left 2,000 children orphaned.

Putin critic Navalny among 'hundred held' at Moscow protest

Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny and more than 100 other demonstrators have been arrested at a rally in central Moscow, activists say.

Navalny had urged protesters to gather in Manezh Square near the Kremlin after his brother was sentenced to jail.

Police detained Navalny at the protest and took him home, where he has been under house arrest since February.

He says the legal cases against him and his brother are motivated by his opposition to President Vladimir Putin.

Hours earlier, a court in Moscow handed Alexei Navalny a suspended prison sentence of three-and-a-half years for defrauding two firms. His brother Oleg was given a three-and-a-half-year custodial sentence for the same offence.

Navalny accused authorities of trying to punish him by jailing his brother, and called for his supporters to gather in central Moscow in protest.

Around 2,000 people gathered in temperatures below -10C.

Pro-government protesters are staging a counter-demonstration nearby, our correspondent Steve Rosenberg reports.

At least 171 people were detained by police said OVD Info, a campaign group that monitors political detentions. However there was no official confirmation of the number of arrests.

'Take to the streets'

After the sentencing of his brother on Tuesday morning, a visibly shocked Navalny called on his supporters to "take to the streets".

Upon arriving at the rally, police detained the opposition leader and drove him to his house in a police van.

He said he was not allowed out of his flat and that five soldiers stood guard outside.

After his arrest, Navalny sent a tweet saying that he "had not got as far as the square".

"I call on everyone not to leave until they are forced to," he said. "They cannot arrest everyone".

Just before his arrest, he told reporters that his motivation was "not my brother, my family, myself or some specific people" but "this disgusting outrage that has been going for many years".

Prosecutors had demanded 10 years in prison for Alexei Navalny and eight years for his brother Oleg. One prominent MP from President Putin's United Russia party said they should launch an appeal for a stronger sentence.

Alexei Navalny is the opposition figure the Kremlin fears most. The case against him was widely seen as politically motivated.

And because his brother was also on trial he had accused the authorities of trying to take his family members hostage to get at him.

Alexei was visibly shocked by the sentence. "Why are you jailing him [Oleg]?" he shouted at the judge. "Just to punish me even harder?"

A healthcare worker who has just returned from West Africa has been diagnosed with Ebola and is being treated in hospital in Glasgow.

The woman, who arrived from Sierra Leone on Sunday night, is in isolation at Glasgow's Gartnavel Hospital.

All possible contacts with the case are being investigated, including on flights to Scotland via Heathrow.

The woman will be transferred to specialist high level isolation in London as soon as possible.

At a news conference in Glasgow, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon stressed that the risk to the general public was very low.

She added that the patient was thought to have had contact with only one other person since arriving in the city, but that all passengers on the flights the woman took will be traced.

Nicola Sturgeon: Ebola risk 'extremely low'

NHS Scotland said infectious diseases procedures had been put into effect at the Brownlee Unit for Infectious Diseases at Gartnavel.

Ebola is transmitted by direct contact with the bodily fluids - such as blood, vomit or faeces - of an infected person.

The patient returned to Scotland from Sierra Leone late on Sunday via Casablanca and London Heathrow, arriving into Glasgow Airport on a British Airways flight at about 23:30.

While public health experts have emphasised that the risks are negligible, a telephone helpline has been set up for anyone who was on the BA 1478 Heathrow to Glasgow flight. The number is: 08000 858531

The woman had been admitted to hospital early on Monday morning after feeling unwell and was placed into isolation at 07.50.

'A little knowledge is a dangerous thing'

'A little knowledge is a dangerous thing' and 'a little learning is a dangerous thing' have been used synonymously since the 18th century.

The version 'a little learning' is widely attributed to Alexander Pope (1688 - 1744). It is found in An Essay on Criticism, 1709, and I can find no earlier example of the expression in print:

A little learning is a dangerous thing; 
drink deep, or taste not the Pierian spring: 
there shallow draughts intoxicate the brain, 
and drinking largely sobers us again.

The similarity of the two phrases is demonstrated by what appears to be an impromptu coining of 'a little knowledge is a dangerous thing' in a piece in The monthly miscellany; or Gentleman and Lady's Complete Magazine, Vol II, 1774, in which the writer misquoted Pope:

Mr. Pope says, very truly, "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing."

Both Pope's original verse and the misquotation of it were predated by an anonymous author, signing himself 'A B', in the collection of letters published in 1698 as The mystery of phanaticism:

"Twas well observed by my Lord Bacon, That a little knowledge is apt to puff up, and make men giddy, but a greater share of it will set them right, and bring them to low and humble thoughts of themselves.

Again, there is a degree of misquotation here; what 'my Lord Bacon', the English politician and philosopher Francis Bacon, Viscount St Alban, actually said, inThe Essays: Of Atheism, 1601, was:

"A little philosophy inclineth man's mind to atheism; but depth in philosophy bringeth men's minds about to religion."

So, who coined the phrase? It appears to have been a group effort. Bacon can be credited with the idea, Pope with the 'learning' version and the mysterious 'A B' with the 'knowledge' version.

The team at the Monklands hospital, in Scotland, urged parents to keep a careful eye on young children playing with loom bands.

They said an inhaled loom band or clip could prove fatal.

Noses or ears

Dr Iain Bohler, a surgical registrar and report author, who has since moved to New Zealand, said while it was common for children to turn up at hospital with small objects in their noses or ears, medics had only started to see this with loom bands fairly recently.

"Often foreign bodies are removed with little more than distress to the child, however, in the worst case scenario, they can lead to blocked airways, cardiorespiratory arrest and death."

Dr Bohler said that loom bands could be a lot of fun, unleashing children's creative minds.

"I would however stress with utmost sincerity, the need for parental vigilance in supervising young children playing with loom bands, or any other toy or item with small parts."

Global craze

Rainbow loom, the plastic device for weaving the small bands, was invented in 2011.

The craze for making them into jewellery and even items of clothing has taken off worldwide.


Celebrities including the Duchess of Cambridge and David Beckham have been spotted wearing loom band bracelets.

Two of the children reported by Dr Bohler had inserted one of the s-shaped hooks - used to complete loom band bracelets - into their nose. One child ended up swallowing it after initially choking.

The other two young children had managed to get loom bands stuck in their nasal passages.

Local anaesthetic and crocodile forceps were needed, with the children becoming very distressed at attempts to get the objects out.

Dr Bohler said: "Should any parents be remotely concerned their child has swallowed or inhaled any object, they must contact emergency services immediately."

Dr Donald MacGregor, spokesman for the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, advised parents to be aware that "small objects will always get into places you don't want them to be with young children."

He called for families to ensure they knew what to do in the event ofchoking.

Another Minnesotan possibly killed fighting for ISIS

MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) - Reports on social media indicate another Minnesotan may have died fighting for ISIS in Syria.

A Twitter user who is known to have connections to al-Shabaab in Somalia, claims the man was killed during a recent U.S.-backed offensive in the Syrian city of Kobane. On Twitter the militant said, "Allahu Akbar (God is Great), a young Somali brother I used to know back in Minnesota got Martyred in Kobane."

The Twitter user identifies the dead man only as "Yusuf," and says Yusuf's older brother is with him in Somalia.

'We believe he's a recruiter'

"This is someone (Yusuf) we've been following for some time," said Omar Jamal, a Minnesota Somali community leader with the group American Friends of Somalia. "We believe he's a recruiter and may've even purchased tickets."

Jamal said Yusuf is believed to have left Minnesota in June shortly after another man, Abdullahi Yusuf, attempted to leave on May 28, but was intercepted by FBI agents at the Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport. Abdullahi Yusuf, 18, is in custody and was indicted last month with another Minnesotan, Abdi Nur, 22, for providing material support for the terrorist organization ISIS. Nur is believed to be in Syria fighting for ISIS. The FBI says there is no evidence he has returned to the United States.

FBI investigating

FBI spokesperson Kyle Loven said the agency is aware of our report and they're looking into it, but can neither confirm nor deny that another Minnesotan has died fighting for ISIS in Syria.

Who is the Twitter user?

The Twitter user who disclosed Yusuf's death, goes by the name "Miski" and sources tell Fox 9 News they believe he's the same "Miski" identified in a federal indictment as Mohamed Abdullahi Hassan. Hassan was indicted in August 2008 of traveling from Minnesota to Somalia to join al-Shabaab. He remains a fugitive from justice.

Federal prosecutors said last month that Hassan (aka Miski) had contact with Minnesotans who had traveled to Syria to fight for ISIS. According to the federal indictment against Abdi Nur, Hassan allegedly communicated through Facebook from Somalia with Nur in Syria.

"Us brother from mpls wanted to know how many you guys are back there in sham (Syria/Iraq)?," Hassan asked last August in a Facebook communication to Nur. From Syria, Nur replied, "Only three of us the others there still working making hijra (journey)."

In a conversation that illustrated Jihadist connections between Syria, Somalia, and Minnesota, Hassan (aka Miski) told Nur:

"Being connected in Jihad make you stronger and you can all help each other by fulfilling the duties that Allah swt put over you… Like us in Somalia the brothers from mpls are well connected so try to do the same… It is something we have learned after 6 years in Jihhad (in Somalia)."

According to the indictment, Hassan (aka Miski) tells Nur: "Jihad teaches you to have as much connection as you can from other Jihadi fronts. That's some lessons we got the past 6 years."

The Diaspora of Somaliland are united in one common objective and that is to rebuild Somaliland from the ashes. Since 1991 Somaliland has reinstated her independence gained from Great Britain on 26th June 1960. Somaliland Diaspora wants the International Community to honour their International Legal Obligation and stop shackling Somaliland to the failed state of Somalia. This is immoral and unjust. Somaliland is an Independent and African Sovereign State. Somaliland is not Somalia!!

Somaliland The Gateway to Art and Culture in Africa - (جمهورية صوماليلاند (أرض الصومال - Somaliland the Shining Sun of the Horn of Africa has operated as an Independent state for the last 21 years and has met international legal standards for “statehood”. What Somaliland lacks is formal recognition of its statehood and support possibly from Friendly States who believe in the spirit of progress for Africa. 

A Royal proclamation of Queen Elizabeth II granted independence to the British Somaliland Protectorate at midnight 25th June, 1960 – and State of Somaliland came into being on 26June. 

The International Community and their Donors have impossed an illegal boycot on Somaliland's righ to recognition 

The International Community and Donors are prolonging the suffering of the Somaliland people by shackling them to the failed and dead state called Somalia. Almost a million of Somalilanders have died and the same number became refugees with the master plan designed by the cruel dictator of Somalia called Siad Barre who used one of the most cruel genocidal tool borrowed from the likes of Hitler to systematically wipe the nation of Somaliland of the Horn of Africa. Somaliland has fought this monster and freed their nation from such horrible cruel regime with minimum assistance from the outside world.

Most Somalilanders who died in this war, were shot to death in individual or group executions, some died of hunger, torture, rape and some were burnt alive and ill-treated in the most inhumane way humanity has witnessed. 

Most Somalilanders who witnessed the terror and genocidal actions of this evil regime know better than anyone how their their brethren perished at the hands of this evil regime. 

In addition to the lost of human lives the infrastructure Somaliland was systematically destroyed beyond repair. Somaliland's schools, hospitals, libraries and technical schools were all destroyed. Somaliland was littered with thousands of land mines that were burried in most strategic cities of Somaliland where these mines are still claiming the lives of women, young children, men, elderly, pastoral nomads and animals to date. According to the UN Development Programme (UNDP), 400,000-800,000 landmines were laid in Somaliland between 1988 and 1991 alone. Buildings can be rebuilt but sadly to repair the physical and psychological damage caused by this war to the people of Somaliland is beyond non Somalilander's understanding.

Over the last two decades Somaliland has rebuilt their nation slowly and the Somaliland Diaspora has played a lion's share in this nation building. Somaliland has survived over the last 20 years an illegal boycott in which the International Community has imposed on the people of Somaliland. Somaliland Diaspora sees this illegal boycott as immoral as it is totally denying 6 millions Somalilanders their basic right to recognition. Somaliland is a noble nation and will not hand out a begging bowl as they are asking for what they have a right which is recognition. Somaliland will work harder to rebuild their nation brick by brick so as to complete their journey and healing towards better future. The nation of Somaliland in times of dire needs have fallen back on their Somaliland Diaspora and loyal Friends of Somaliland who stand shoulder to shoulder with them in hard times and good times.

Somaliland has divorced herself from the shackles of the failed state of Somalia since 1991 maitaining her sovereignty and independence. For the last 20 years Somaliland has created peace, good governance, democracy and security in a hostile region riddled with poverty, piracy and terrorism. However, the International Community has given deaf ear and turned a blind eye on Somaliland's plea for help.

Bold actions are needed from the International Community to reward Somaliland’s unique achievements with recognition which will send a loud and clear message to the emerging young generations of African Somalilanders aswell as the nation of Somaliland. The EU and the AU have witnessed human holocausts in this century in their own continents and should exercise caution when dealing with the future generations of Somaliland who are asking serious questions as to why their God given rights have been denied for the last 20 years. Somaliland Diaspora so far has been busy rebuilding their nation and they themselves are now asking serious questions as to why the International Community is turning a blind eye to Somaliland's natural righ for recognition. Somaliland will not allow her people to go through yet another holocaust especially since terrorism and security are creating global threats to the stability of the Horn of Africa. The time has come for the International Community to honour their International Obligation and Accountability and stop shackling Somaliland to the failed if not dead state of Somalia. Somaliland is located in a strategic location of the Horn and their partnership to maintain global security should not be underestimated. Somaliland Diaspora would like to remind the International Community that Democracy alone is not going to feed the next generation of Somaliland and if Somaliland's economy ceases to exist to create jobs and rebuild the nation then the very stability that Somaliland has maintained over the last 20 years would be in real jeopardy.

Somaliland has reinstated her independence in 1991 and will move on to work with their new found Friends of Somaliland who are supporting them in rebuilding their nation from bottom and guiding them at the same time.

What Somaliland would not tolerate is to be labelled with the failed state of Somalia. It is time Africa welcomes her young nation with open arms. A restaurant in China is offering men discounts if they're overweight - but women pay less for being thin, it's been reported.

The Na Huo eatery in Chongqing, south-west China, is trying to attract more customers with promotions based on customers' size, the China Radio International website reports. As a male diner's weight increases, so do the discounts, and if a man weighs more than 140 kg (22 stone) then he eats for free. But it's the opposite for women, who only get their food bill covered if they weigh less than 34.5kg (5st 6lb), the website says. Promotional photos posted on the restaurant's Weibo social media page show diners being weighed with staff looking on. "Na Huo restaurant cares about fat people and thin people. Bring your fat or thin friends, eat for free," it says on the page. A similar gimmick was used by a restaurant in the US city of Las Vegas in 2010, which offered free meals to obese customers. The Heart Attack Grill served up 10,000-calorie burgers, but its owner has since told people to stay away and eat more healthily.

Most Chinese social media users find the idea funny, but one Weibo user is concerned about the rules for female diners: "A weight of 34.5kg or lower is what level of thinness?" Anyone hoping to bulk up - or slim down - to take advantage of the offer doesn't have much time. When 2014 ends, all customers will become equal again, regardless of their size.

A company in one Chinese city has money to burn, and is using it to make electricity, it's reported.

The power plant in Luoyang, central Henan Province, is burning old and damaged banknotes instead of coal - the first time this has been done in China, the official Xinhua news agency reports. The plant says one tonne of notes can generate more than 600 kWh of electricity, and is better for the environment than burning coal. The country's central bank, the People's Bank of China, has given permission for the notes to be burned, and says it's an efficient way to make electricity. With the province's unused paper money the company "can help generate 1.32 million kWh of electricity annually, which is equal to burning 4,000 tonnes of coal", a member of staff at the bank tells Xinhua.

Banknotes which are withdrawn from circulation in China after being worn out by handling or other damage are most commonly used to make paper products, according to the Dahe Daily news website. The idea of setting fire to the city's cash has amused Chinese social media users. "Burning money? Luoyang is such a rich city!" says one Weibo user, while another person writes: "I'm willing to go a year without electricity, please give me a pile of cash!" But one user has a craftier suggestion: "Hire me as an employee, I promise I won't take any money.
