Somaliland: Confusions forces Guurti to suspend sessions

The Guurti remains closedBy: Yusuf M Hasan

HARGEISA (Somalilandsun) - The house of elders-Guurti remains closed for the second day following Tuesday's stormy debate that forced debate suspension.

The bone of contention leading to the suspended sessions was a motion brought signed by 25 members demanding the immediate removal of Guurti secretary for corrupt practices.

The motion signers alleged that operations of the house of elders are grounding to a halt owing to malpractices emanating from Abdilahi Ibrahim Habane the secretary general of the Guurti which including misappropriation of funds and assumption of powers that negate the effectiveness of the Guurti.

The elders became noisy and rowdy when Sh. Ahmed Sh. Fure the Guurti deputy chair said that the accusation alleged in the motion was a non-starter thus not to be debated because no evidence has been put forth.

A completion on which side could shout louder between the motion proposers and opposers then ensued forcing the deputy chair to suspend sessions indefinitely.

Elder Jama Farah Riyo one of the motion proposers said that it was the right of house members to be allowed to submit motions of one substance or another and allowed a debate. He claimed that it was an irregular occurrence to have Guurti sessions suspended for similar reasons.

On the other hand, Elder Aideed Abdi Mohamed said that the Guurti had a set of enshrined cultures that dictate that any complaints are dealt with in-house and not through motions that a preceded by rowdiness.
