An air raid has left at least 12 people dead in southern Somalia, witnesses said.

Reports from Jubaland indicated that on Tuesday afternoon, fighter planes bombed Hosingo’ village, which is about 160km southwest of Kismayu, the main port town in southern Somalia.

Al-Shabaab authority that controls the area accused the attackers as Kenyans that have been operating inside Somalia since mid-October.

Mr Mohamed Ibrahim Omar, an elder from the affected area, told the media that 12 people died in the attack while 24 others were wounded, most of them severely.

The elder added that one Al-Shabaab militant was among the dead while the rebel group's chief in the area was among the wounded.

Villagers insisted that two aircraft were involved in the raid, which mainly affected civilian population.

Residents also complained of lack of medical attention as most of the victims were taken to Kismayu town.

Kenyan troops have been associated with airstrikes, which they claim had killed scores of Al-Shabaab militants and their associates.

In October, the Kenyan and Somali governments agreed to jointly fight Al-Shabaab insurgents.
