UAE minister to stand trial for alleged fraud

DUBAI, July 18, 2008 (AFP) - A state minister in the United Arab
Emirates is to be tried on charges of breach of trust, fraud and
abetting a crime in an unprecedented case in the Gulf country,
newspapers reported on Friday.

The unnamed minister of state and three alleged associates will go to
court after the public prosecutor in Dubai investigated a complaint
lodged by a Lebanese businesswoman last month, Dubai's attorney
general Issam al-Humaidan was quoted as saying.

The minister's name has not been made public since reports of his
alleged offences surfaced last month. The alleged offences were
committed before he entered government, according to the reports.

The Lebanese businesswoman accused the minister of "breaching the
trust of her family's business, including a huge property and a
company based in Dubai," the daily Gulf News quoted Humaidan as
saying.

He will be questioned by a court on charges of breach of trust,
embezzlement, swindling and aiding and abetting a crime, Humaidan
said.

It was not clear when the trial would start.

Khaleej Times, describing the case as unprecedented in the oil-rich
UAE, said it relates to a business association which began in 1995
between the suspect and the woman's brother, who died in 2005.

Al-Bayan said the minister's alleged associates include an American
and two Gulf nationals.
