Boubacar Diarra , Special Representative of the African Union Commission for Somalia welcomed the successful ratification of the new constitution on Wednesday (August 1). He noted that it was “the culmination of years of hard work by the Somali people with the support of the international community, " adding that "The adoption of a provisional constitution by the National Constituent Assembly, representative of the people of Somalia, will protect the gains made and provide a legal foundation for Somalia's new institutions.".
The Special Representative said the upcoming selection of political leaders, including parliamentarians, the Speaker of Parliament, the Prime Minister and the President were also essential steps for the end of the transition and should be conducted transparently and in a credible manner. He also praised the military victories of AMISOM and Somali troops, in liberating a significant swath of land in Southern and Central Somalis from al-Shabaab. They were important security gains and instrumental for enabling political progress.
