Reprinted: “I Chew Some Khat” By Peter Gutierrez

Strange place this Djibouti is - between the hours of 1300 and 1600 you can find most anyone with a mouth, gnawing on a twig, nibbling on a branch or masticating on a bunch of leaves like some semi-lucid and serene bovine - what are they chewing?
Why Khat, of course! The “little leaf that could” has the people in its grasp - ever seen the zombies in “Night of The Living Dead”? That’s what some of these people look like - glazed over eyes - blank looks and stares - their brains no longer attached to their tired, diseased or hungry bodies.
They are lost in some other world where there is no pain - just a dull numbing calm where everything (including time) just seems to pass you by!
In honor of this mind and body numbing experience (not unlike Camp Lemonier!), we butchered a well known drug-culture song and fashioned it to our needs…”

I chew Khat

I chew some khat in the morning, I chew some khat at night
I chew some khat in the afternoon, it makes me feel alright
I chew some khat in time of peace, and chew in time of war
I chew some khat before I chew some khat, and then I chew some more
Oh my daddy he once told me, “Son, you be hard working man”
My mama she once told me, “Son, you do the best you can”
But then one day I met a man who came to me and said
“Hard work good and hard work fine, but first take care of head”
So now, I chew some khat when I get up, in the car I chew some khat
I chew some khat when I play video game And at every ten thousand points (I chew some khat)
I chew some khat in time of peace, and chew in time of war
I chew some khat before I chew some khat, and then I chew some more
Oh, my daddy he once told me, “Son, you be hard working man”
My mama she once told me, “Son, you do the best you can”
But then one day I met a man who came to me and said”
Hard work good and hard work fine, but first take care of head”
I chew some khat in the morning, I chew some khat at night
I chew some khat in the afternoon, it makes me feel alright
I chew some khat in time of peace, and chew in time of war
I chew some khat before I chew some khat
And then I chew some more CHEW SOME KHAT
That’s what I do CHEW SOME KHAT
Come and chew some khat with me in the morning CHEW SOME KHAT
Come and chew some khat with me in the afternoon, yeah CHEW SOME KHAT
Hey, would you rather chew some khat or would you rather do your homework?
CHEW SOME KHAT I knew you were going to say that!
CHEW SOME KHAT CHEW SOME KHAT That’s what I do!
