CAIRO: Foreign Minister Prince Saud Al-Faisal yesterday said there should be a serious international commitment to put a quick end to the escalating humanitarian tragedy in Syria and pave the way to remove the tyranny of an unjust regime.
Addressing the Second Arab-European Ministerial Meeting, he said such a commitment was essential to begin the process of power transfer on the basis of a clear resolution by the Security Council.
Catherine Ashton, EU Foreign Policy chief, welcomed the Doha agreement but warned of a spillover from the conflict.
EU foreign ministers welcomed the newly formed Syrian opposition bloc, urging it to bring in more regime dissenters.
Khatib called on world powers to arm rebels, telling AFP they desperately needed arms if they were to “cut short the suffering of the Syrians and their bloodshed.”
“We need specialized weapons,” he added.
French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius urged the international community to recognize the body.
UK Foreign Secretary William Hague said: “It is a very important milestone and a very big step toward (recognition).”
Khatib said his bloc was representative of most opposition groups, even as European countries and the Arab League fell short of recognizing it as a government in exile.
At least 63 people were reported killed in yesterday’s clashes, including 41 in Damascus.
