HARGEISA (Somalilandsun) – A team of Turkish Doctors is in the country to conduct a medical needs assessment.

The nine member Turkish medical mission that arrived three days ago will be in the country for ten days, thence submits their assessment report to TIKA and government officials back home.

This was revealed by Dr. Ahmet Utku Ozan who is leading the Turkish team composed of 8 health professionals and one administrator during an interview with Somalilandsun at the Hargeisa Group Hospital where they are based.

The Turkish team has already embarked on treating in & out patients at the Hargeisa Group hospital where the Turks 2 dentists, 2 orthopedic surgeons, 2 general surgeons, 1 anesthesia 1 and anesthetic technician have their hands full attending to a multitude of ailments. The team said that they will continue attending patients until the last minute prior to departure.

According to Dr. Ahmet, the Turks have also donated a number of orthopedic chairs to in-patients after performing orthopedic surgery on them, Said he, "some of the orthopedic patients have been hospitalized for a long time without a locally available recourse for their ailments"

The Turkish team which is the country following a letter of request from the ministry of health, will brought with it 650 kilograms of assorted medical supplies that they are utilizing of whose balance plus three dental chairs will be donated to the hospital when their mission is complete.

According to the Turks team leader, their observation so far indicate that though the medical sector is more advanced than in the whole of Somalia, a lot needs to be done for after surgery patient's intensive care is non-existent.

The team says that other areas that need urgent attention and support include the dental unit which is currently devoid of not only qualified Dentists and dental surgeons but basic dentistry facilities while the number of patients is high.

"While medical and administration personnel at the hospital are doing a superb job further training is imperative thus better standards of service provision"

The Turks, who praised Somalilanders for the warm welcome accorded them, are all volunteers from different institutions in Turkey. Though TIKA has paid for their return tickets, team members are responsible for all other personal expenses incurred while in Somaliland.

According to Dr. Ahmet the Turks who are all Muslims do not considers themselves as official workers but as humanitarians on a Waqaf (Charity) mission which they termed an Islamic obligation that they have decided to render to fellow suffering Muslims especially in Somalia and Somaliland thus their willingness to pay personal expenses from their own savings.

Though this is the first visit to the country, the team that has conducted similar assessments in various parts of Somalia, is determined to return with more support to a country that they say is more secure than Ankara the capital city of Turkey which Dr Ahmet equated to the notorious city of New York where he spend 11 years.

The team is also interested in the Turkish monuments in Berbera which they plan to visit during their next visit.

In conclusion Dr. Ahmet Utku Ozan urged Somalilanders to maintain prevalent peace and security that has made it possible for the Turks and other foreigners to move freely without the need of armed body guards as happens in Somalia.
