14 children were brought from famine-stricken Somalia to Istanbul, Turkey for medical treatment.
14 Somali children who have been suffering from several diseases due to malnutrition were brought from Mogadishu to Istanbul by initiatives of Turkish International Cooperation and Development Agency (TIKA), the Human Rights and Freedoms (IHH) Humanitarian Aid Foundation and Turkish Airlines (THY).
Later Somali children were taken to private Avicenna Hospital in Esenler district by ambulances.
IHH Deputy Chairman Yasar Kutluay said that there was a fatal drought in the east of Africa, stating that IHH has been exerting efforts for Somalia for 16 years. The foundation had taken 20 million Turkish lira of aid to camps in Somalia and Kenya since the beginning of the drought, he said.
"We hope that these children will recover and return to their country," he said.
Kutluay said that Turkish people exerted great efforts for Africa. "We would like to thank everyone especially Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan for their contributions to this campaign," he said.
Kutluay said that they would bring more patients to Turkey. "We have a hospital there, Arafat Hospital. IHH has sponsored the hospital for 10 years," he said.
Kutluay also said that they were planning to make Mavi Marmara ship, which was attacked by Israeli troops in international waters when it was taking aid to Gaza, "hospital ship" for Somalia.
