Iraq Elections: Why Winning the Vote Won’t Be Enough

13 April 2010: On 7 March Iraqis participated in national polls for the third time since the US-led invasion. Former Prime Minister Ayad Allawi's secular coalition edged out sitting leader Nouri Al-Maliki to win the largest bloc in parliament, but after more than a month of negotiations and disputes the composition of the fragile country's new government remains a mystery. Joost Hiltermann, deputy program director for the Middle East and North Africa, discusses why the close result could put a dark-horse candidate in line for the presidency.
