Wow!! What a welcome. What a superfluous outpouring of support? What an enthusiasm for change? That was a tectonic plate shift, that was a sea change. The urgent mesage to the Rayaale administration was hold the elections and pass the torch to chairman Siiranyo and quickly. Last Sunday change was all over the air.
Clouds of hope were hovering all over Hargeisa and Somaliland. The message of change is ascribed everywhere. The Rayaale administration can't afford to ignore the huge public sentiment for change. What was seen in the streets of Hargeisa may be a predictor of what is in store and may be coming soon. On last Sunday Hargeisa masses looked like the 400, 000 American citizens who welcomed the then Senator Obama to Portland, Oregon or the 500, 000 that came out for candidate Obama in Berlin, Germany last year. Chairman Siiranyo surrounded by hundreds of thousands of enthusiastic supporters in Hargeisa last Sunday, looked like General Juan Peron welcomed back to Argentina in 1972 by Peronists after a long exile. On Sunday the overwhelming public support for Kulmiye became a day light. Nobody can hide or deny the support Kulmiye party enjoys in Somaliland anymore. On Sunday the presidential chair came walking to Chairman Siiranyo. The message to the Rayaale administration was give the presidential palace keys to chairman Siiranyo without delay.
The public show of force was breath taking and superfluous. What had happened on the 31st of January, 2010 in Hargeisa was overwhelming, unprecedented, unpremeditated, and spontaneous. As soon as the special airplane that brought chairman Ahmed Siiranyo to Hargeisa landed, Hargeisa masses were gripped with overwhelming enthusiasm, emotion and deep support for Kumlmye party.
The masses of humanity waving Kulmiye and Somaliland flags have filled Hargeisa streets. Men, women, children and the elderly were brimming with unlimited flow of energy. The people of Hargeisa yesterday acted just like possessed robots. Their unlimited energy and enuthisasm was robotic, over powering, endless, and renewable. More amazing than that is the their orderliness, civility, and magnanimity. No single act of disorderly conduct was reported. The masses of the Horn of Africa has to emulate how the people of Somaliland in general and people of Hargeisa in particular have acted to welcome their beloved leader and presidential candidate. This is also a blatant message to the election commission and the Rayaale administration, that the election must be held as soon as possible. The election commission needs to set a date for the election. Hargeisa on Sunday was all Kulmiye, one can barely see UDUB party members anywhere in Hargeisa. That was our neighboring dictators wish to have but in reality do not have.Security forces have closed the main road that passes in front of the Somaliland's presidential palace. The human wave that came to welcome the next president of Somaliland were unbelievable, even the chairman himself can not believe what he has seen. The message behind the huge welcome was clear. The people of Somaliland need change for the better. They are longing for structural reform of the whole country. Kulmiye party must deliver the tremendous public expectations from them. They must know taking the mantle of the country is not an easy task. It is both a huge challenge and opportunity at the same time. I am hoping Kulmiye will deliver their presidential election platform.
