Retired President Daniel arap Moi has expressed his support for the presidential system of government where the president is elected directly by the people terming it the best as the president becomes accountable to those who elected him.
The former president differed with those calling for the establishment of a parliamentary system of government in the new constitution where a president will be elected by the parliament.
Speaking at Tembelyon Secondary School in Eldoret [northwest of Nairobi], Moi said if such a system was put in place then the people would be cut off from the president as whoever becomes president will be more accountable to MP's who elected them.
The former president attributed the problems afflicting Zimbabwe and Somali to bad governance from leaders who do not listen to the people.
On education the former president asked the government to improve polytechnics instead of upgrading them to universities saying they served a vital role in absorbing thousands of form four leavers who do not make it to universities. Moi however hailed the government for availing funds to improve village polytechnics which he said will go a long way in providing vocational training to young Kenyans. He called on the locals to embrace peace and strive to coexist peacefully saying whatever happened in January after the elections was unfortunate and should never be allowed to happen again.
