$4 billion budget for Mozambique

A $4 billion budget for Mozambique has been approved by that country's parliament. It is said to have shot by five percent. The budget among others is expected to tackle poverty which is one of the priority areas as well as improve the country's education.

Mozambique’s Prime Minister Luisa Diogo said the 2009 budget would look at reducing poverty."The main goal of this budget is to reduce the percentage of people living in extreme poverty who are facing hunger, and to create decent employment for everyone," Diogo said.The country said tackling poverty was the top priority and spending would go mainly on education, health, infrastructure, agriculture, governance and public order.

It is also said that a big chunk of money was earmarked for the recruitment of teachers, heath workers and police. A Reuters report said the country which is one of the poorest in Africa will need to make up a 55 percent budget shortfall with tax increases as well as grants and soft loans from international partners. Mozambique is striving to develop the country which lost most of its infrastructure through the civil war which lasted until 1991 before ending in 1992.

Last week the country also announced that it was issuing a tender to a third mobile firm in order to improve communication.The country has also taken a tremendous stride in improving its tourism sector in order to attract more tourists ahead of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.According to the country’s media reports, Mozambique, which has a population of about 20 million, aims to reduce poverty to 40 percent in 2015 from 45 percent now.
