Dubai plans to build the first eco-friendly mosque near the Clocktower Roundabout in Deira.
Awqaf and Minors Affairs Foundation (AMAF) said the 45,000 square feet mosque would take shape over an area of 105,000 square feet.
As the largest mosque in Dubai, the facility will accommodate 3,500 worshippers.
Using green building techniques that will reduce energy and water consumption, the AED 25 million mosque will set new construction benchmarks in the UAE.
Set for completion end of 2013, the AMAF will open the project for bidding on June 3 and commission a specialist consultant to recommend a holistic plan that will help achieve the highest energy and water efficiency.
The mosque will feature green spaces, particularly gardens on the roof for heat insulation.
In addition to green building technologies such as solar panels to heat water for ablution and the imam’s house, the mosque will incorporate recycling plants to treat water used in ablution for reuse.
Equipped with the latest technologies in energy efficiency to curb wastage in air-conditioning and air purifying, the mosque will be constructed with eco-friendly materials and avoid the use of asbestos and polystyrene.
The mosque will additionally use thermal insulation, programmed and automatic thermostats, suction fans with energy recovery units, and natural light and heat reflective colors.
Tayeb Abdulrahman Al-Rais, secretary general of AMAF, said: “The construction of the Mosque is in line with the UAE leadership’s vision toward the conservation of resources, environmental protection and the adoption of green practices.
“With the global call for energy conservation, it is essential for developers to take responsibility for creating buildings that comply with green standards.”

That was a big step ahead in 2012! Sustainable cities and green buildings will become even more important in the New Year I suppose (and hope).
Just as a reminder: Buildings account for 40% of worldwide energy consumption. At the same time, up to 40% of their consumed energy can be saved by using sustainable technology (http://www.siemens.ae/sustainable-cities/sustainable-cities.html#Green-Buildings). Why not using it for a mosque? I think it’s appropriate.
