Hosni Mubarak guilty verdict sparks courtroom scuffles

Former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak receives a life sentence for his role in the killing of anti-government protesters last year but is aquitted on corruption charges, sparking angry exchanges in the courtroom.

Former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak was sentenced to life in prison on Saturday after being convicted of ordering the killings of anti-government protesters last year but the sentence, short of a death penalty, and his acquittal of corruption charges sparked outrage and scuffles in the courtroom.

Many Egyptians had expected the former strongman to receive a light sentence and were bracing for bigger protests as a result, but his life sentence appeased some of his critics outside the court.

Mubarak listened to the verdict and sentencing on a hospital gurney alongside his two sons and former regime officials.

"Firstly, Mohammed Hosni al-Sayyid Mubarak is sentenced to life in prison for his role in the killing of protesters," said presiding judge Ahmed Refaat.

"Mohammed Hosni al-Sayyid Mubarak is innocent of the charges that were attributed to him of conspiring with a government employee to unlawfully receiving money in an abuse of his position," he added.
