Police bundle Darwish R into a pick up carBy: Yusuf M HasanERIGAVO (Somalilandsun) – Police in Erigavo continue to detain a local journalist without trial for the fifth day.
Mr. Abdilahi Hussein Darwish a reporter for the Royal 24 TV and Waheen newspaper has not been arraigned in court five days after his arrest by police in Erigavo. The police claim he was arrested for giving false information meant to discredit the Sanaag regional administration.
According to the police, Mr. Darwish who also doubles as the regional chairman of the Somaliland Journalists Association –SOLJA in Sanaag is said to have given false report alleging that food donations were misappropriated while the regional administration which ordered his arrest claim the opposite.
As the journalist has not been charged in a court of law where the prosecution could have produced evidence to the contrary and the defense its proof, the arrest remains suspicious. The lengthily stay in custody is also a violation of his rights thus an imperative need for the administration to either charge or release him.
Though SOLJA has condemned the arrest and demanded the journalist immediate release, the status quos remains with Darwish in custody and SOLJA toothless.
Mr. Darwish joins a long list of journalists who have been detained by the administration on various charges though none have been arraigned in court. The Silanyo administration is credited with the highest number of journalist's arrests that so far surpass those of past administrations combined in less than two years in office.
On the other hand the issue of food aid corruption has become a thorn in the flesh of the administration following the arrests of three senior officials whose case is ongoing in Hargeisa.
