JEDDAH, 1 Rabi 1/24 Jan (IINA) – The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) will convene a conference on “Water for Life in Somalia” to help solve the water crisis in this country. The conference will be held in the Republic of Djibouti on Thursday, 26 January 2012.

The conference comes as a follow up to the Cairo conference, which was held on 5 October 2011, as part of an OIC campaign to mobilize civil society organizations in the OIC Member States to contribute actively towards solving the problem of clean drinking water shortage for the people in Somali.

Djibouti conference aims to coordinate efforts to undertake the project of providing water in Somalia in light of the rising pledges of civil society organizations in the Member States which had pledged to dig 650 boreholes at an estimated total cost of US$ 82 million.

The OIC delegation participating in the conference, which will be led by the OIC Assistant Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs, Ambassador Atta ElMannan Bakhit will present a roadmap defining the sites of the boreholes in the various regions in Somalia and to outline the technical and administrative arrangements to enable the implementing agencies commence their digging operations.

It should be noted that Djibouti and Cairo conferences are being organized within the framework of the OIC initiative on Somalia and the OIC Secretary General’s appeal to reduce the effects of famine and enhance the capacities to deal with drought which lasted for a long time in Somalia and the need to provide equal opportunities to allow all people have access to water through restoration and repair of existing water resources, repair of dams and digging boreholes to encourage the people return to their hometowns.
