KAMPALA – An Emma Okwi hat-trick and Dan Wagaluka strike were enough to book Uganda a place in the last eight of the Tusker Cecafa Challenge Cup as they thrashed Somalia 4-0 at Azam Stadium, Tanzania on Monday.
The result sends the Cranes top of Group B on six points after two matches having beaten Zanzibar 2-1 in the opening match. Burundi are second on four points while Somalia, the whipping boys of the group, have no point.
Cranes were intent on maximizing their goal difference as Bobby started with Mike Sserumaga and Mutyaba, Okwi, Robert Ssentongo and Wagaluka in attack.
The Cranes pounded the Somalis the entire half but there was no breaching the barrier. That was some resilient defending for a side that trailed Burundi 3-0 down inside the first 45 minutes.
But not for long. Bobby’s men turned on the heat and within the first two minutes of the second half, Wagaluka’s cross from the right found its way past the Somali goalkeeper Qalid Ali to break the deadlock.
Okwi added the second on 57 minutes, heading in Simeon Masaba’s cross from the right as Bobby’s men pressed.
The Simba striker netted his second when he tapped in substitute Moses Oloya’s low ball and it was only fitting he ends his day with a hat-trick, latching onto a Godfrey Walusimbi long ball to beat Ali.
The only downside of the match was Cranes skipper Andy Mwesigwa and Somali captain Yasin Ali getting matching orders for indecent behavior. They both will miss their next games. Uganda next face Burundi on Thursday.
