Kuwait fully behind Palestine, Somalia in IPU Conf. - Al-Kharafi

BERN, Oct 15 (KUNA) -- Speaker of the National Assembly of Kuwait, Jassem Al-Kharafi said here Saturday his country would support Moroccan parliament speaker's candidacy for the presidency of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), as well as backing Somalia and Palestine agenda items.
Speaking to reporters after arrival in Switzerland for the IPU's Conference in Bern, Al-Kharafi said the Arab countries were fully behind the Moroccan bid.
He said the Kuwaiti delegation would focus on relations between parliaments around the world, and would have firm positions vis-a-vis the emergency issues of Palestine and Somalia.

Al-Kharafi said parliamentarians of the Arab and Islamic countries will be coordinating positions regarding the IPU's agenda.
A request is scheduled to include two emergency items: realizing the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination, and the plight of the people of famine-stricken Somalia and relief efforts by IPU members.
Speaking to KUNA, Al-Kharafi said Kuwait would not support any proposal to suspend the memberships of Egypt or Tunisia "as was suggested by some bodies" which he did not name.

"The parliament of Kuwait will exert efforts to win approval of extending technological support for the Palestinian Legislative Council, and we hope our Palestinian brothers have a role in coordinating this issue," he said.
On relations between IPU and the UN, the top Kuwaiti MP hoped these ties would be "clearer and more frank, and that there would be equality among all IPU members, contrary to what is happening in the UN." The IPU Conference will convene tomorrow evening with a speech of the Swiss President Micheline Calmy-Rey. The conference, to conclude on Wednesday, will be also addressed by UN Secretary General Ban ki-moon. (end) ta.ms.bs KUNA 152101 Oct 11NNNN
