The son, Saadi Qaddafi, was in a convoy of some eight people that was intercepted by a Niger Army patrol after crossing the border, Justice Minister Marou Amadou said.
He said the rest of the party were “ordinary folk,” and that they were now being escorted by the army to the northern desert city of Agadez, where other figures in the Qaddafi regime have disembarked, including three generals and the leader’s security chief.
Mr. Amadou said he expected Saadi Qaddafi to make his way to the capital, Niamey, sometime this week. But he said there were no plans to arrest Saadi Qaddafi for now, as there does not appear to be an international arrest warrant for him.
Saadi Qaddafi was reported to have been living in the loyalist stronghold of Bani Walid with his brother Seif al-Islam until last Sunday.
Colonel Qaddafi has five sons. Seif al-Islam, the best known of them, was considered his father’s heir apparent. Saadi, his younger brother, has had careers as an athlete, soldier and Hollywood producer.
