Library will host book talk on 'Somalis in Maine'

The Lewiston Public Library will host a book talk and signing featuring the authors and editors of "Somalis in Maine: Crossing Cultural Currents" on Thursday, Sept. 22.

The free program will begin at 7 p.m. in Callahan Hall on the third floor.

The newly published book is the work of the Somali Narrative Project at the University of Maine, established in 2004 to address some of the challenges and tensions resulting from Somali refugee resettlement in Lewiston.

The collaborative and interdisciplinary project involves Somali students, Somali community members in Lewiston and four faculty members who edited the book.

Combining academic analysis with refugees’ personal stories, "Somalis in Maine" includes reflections on leaving Somalia, life in the refugee camps, the experiences of Somali youth in U.S. schools, the reasons for Somali secondary migration to Lewiston and the employment of many Lewiston Somalis at L L. Bean.

Editors Mazie Hough and Carol Toner will be at the book talk to discuss their work on the project. Also speaking will be Lewiston Deputy City Administrator Phil Nadeau, who penned the chapter on Lewiston’s response to the rapid influx of refugees.
