Dozens held in Yemen al-Qaeda sweep - Middle East - Al Jazeera English

Dozens held in Yemen al-Qaeda sweep - Middle East - Al Jazeera English: "Authorities in Yemen have detained 12 US nationals, amid a series of arrests in the country of foreigners suspected of having ties to al-Qaeda.

On Monday a spokesman for the US state department confirmed the American arrests, but gave no details on why they were detained or whether the US government had anything to do with their being picked up.

Around 50 foreigners are reported to have been arrested by Yemeni security forces in recent days, among them citizens of the UK, France, Malaysia and the US.

The arrests followed increased monitoring of Arabic language schools in the country in the wake of last December's failed attempt to blow up a US-bound plane, the Saudi-owned al-Hayat newspaper said.

The Nigerian suspect in that case had studied Arabic in the Yemeni capital, Sanaa.

Later a Yemen-based arm of al-Qaeda, Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, claimed responsibility for the attempted bombing."
