Antwerp: Court rules company can fire woman for wearing headscarf According to the Antwerp (Belgium) labor court, the wearing of religious clothing or symbols at work is not part of the protected 'faith' criteria in the anti-discrimination law. G4S, a company offering security and reception services, can impose the unwritten company neutrality principle on a Muslim woman who wanted to wear a headscarf. The verdict was reported in the De Juristenkrant legal journal. In 2006 she told her bosses that from now on she wanted to wear a headscarf at work too. During a period of sick-leave, the woman was told that when she comes back, she would also have to wear a uniform. Despite negotiation attempts by the Centre for Equal Opportunities and the Fight Against Racism and the liberal union, it came to a confrontation in which the employee, with a headscarf, was kicked out until she would follow the dress code precisely. Meanwhile, the company board adjusted the regulations and added a new clause which barred employees from 'wearing any visible symbols of their political, ideological or religious convictions at work and/or any ritual act manifested as a result [of those convictions]'. After an unsuccessful meeting, the woman was fired with three months' severance pay. The following day the new regulation came into effect. The court rules that the woman unjustly claimed she was fired for her religious convictions. According to the court, it would only be discrimination if she was fired for being a follower of Islam, according to De Juristenkrant. He wrote that he understood the Jewish nature of the schools, but that he would "contest the place of Zionism in the school's governing ethos". "Zionism is not part of the Jewish faith," he stated. "It is a political ideology which has its roots in the works of Theodore Herzl and subsequent ideologues that have advanced the idea of a national struggle to establish a homeland for the Jews in the modern era." JERUSALEM: Israeli commandos on Monday stormed six ships carrying hundreds of pro-Palestinian activists on an aid mission to the blockaded Gaza Strip, killing at least 10 people and wounding dozens after encountering unexpected resistance as the forces boarded the vessels.

The operation in international waters off the Gaza coast was a nightmare scenario for Israel that looked certain to further damage its international standing, strain already tense relations with Turkey and draw unwanted attention to Gaza's plight.

The two sides offered conflicting accounts of what happened.

A reporter on one of the boats said the Israelis fired at the vessel before boarding it, and the Israelis said they only opened fire after being attacked by activists with sticks, knives and live fire.

Israeli security forces were on alert across the country.

The activists were headed to Gaza on a mission meant to draw attention to a 3-year-old Israeli blockade of the coastal territory. Israel imposed the blockade after Hamas militants took power there.

"It's disgusting that they have come on board and attacked civilians. We are civilians," said Greta Berlin, a spokeswoman for the Free Gaza movement, which organized the flotilla.

Speaking from the east Mediterranean island of Cyprus, she said she had lost contact with the flotilla at about 3:30 a.m. (0030 GMT).

Israel had declared it would not allow the ships to reach Gaza and had offered to transfer the aid to Gaza from an Israeli port. Israeli naval commandos raided the ships while they were in international waters after ordering them to stop about 80 miles (130 kilometers) from Gaza's coast, according to a pro-Palestinian activist in Greece involved in the aid mission.

A Turkish website showed video of pandemonium on board one of the ships, with activists in orange life jackets running around as some tried to help an activist apparently unconscious on the deck. The site also showed video of an Israeli helicopter flying overhead and Israeli warships nearby.

Turkey's NTV showed activists beating one Israeli soldier with sticks as he rappelled from a helicopter onto one of the boats.

The Al-Jazeera satellite channel reported by telephone from the Turkish ship leading the flotilla that Israeli navy forces fired at the ship and boarded it, wounding the captain.

"These savages are killing people here, please help," a Turkish television reporter said.

The broadcast ended with a voice shouting in Hebrew, "Everybody shut up!" The Israeli military said troops only opened fire after encountering unexpected resistance from the activists.

Activists attacked troops with knives and iron rods, and one activist wrested a serviceman's weapon.

A total of four soldiers were wounded, including at least one hit by live fire, the army said. Two of the dead activists had fired at soldiers with pistols, the army said.

"They planned this attack," said Israeli military spokeswoman Lt. Col. Avital Leibovitch. "Our soldiers were injured from these knives and sharp metal objects ... as well as from live fire." The ships were being towed to the Israeli port of Ashdod, and the wounded were evacuated by helicopter to Israeli hospitals, officials said. Sporadic clashes were still going on at midmorning.

There were no details on the identities of the casualties, or on the conditions of some of the more prominent people on board, including 1976 Nobel Peace Prize laureate Mairead Corrigan Maguire of Northern Ireland, European legislators and Holocaust survivor Hedy Epstein, 85.

Satellite phones on board the ships were turned off, and communication with a small group of reporters embedded with the Israeli military was blocked.

The Free Gaza Movement is an international group of pro-Palestinian activists that claims the blockade, imposed three years ago after the militant Islamic Hamas group overran Gaza, is unjust and a violation of international law.

Organizers included people affiliated with the International Solidarity Movement, a pro-Palestinian group that often sends international activists into battle zones, and the IHH, a Turkish aid group that Israel accuses of having terrorist links.

News of the attack sparked violent protests in Turkey, which had unofficially supported the aid mission and has been vocally critical of Israeli military operations against Palestinians in Gaza.

Police blocked dozens of stone-throwing protesters who tried to storm the Israeli consulate in Istanbul. The CNN-Turk and NTV televisions showed dozens of angry protesters scuffling with Turkish police and shouting, "Damn Israel." The Turkish Foreign Ministry condemned the Israeli raid and said it was summoning the Israeli ambassador for an "urgent explanation." It says Israel violated international law and will suffer consequences.

The flotilla of three cargo ships and three passenger ships carrying 10,000 tons of aid and 700 activists was carrying items that Israel bars from reaching Gaza, like cement and other building materials. The activists said they also were carrying hundreds of electric-powered wheelchairs, prefabricated homes and water purifiers to the territory's 1.5 million residents.

"We did not want to see confrontation," said Mark Regev, a spokesman for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who was in Ontario at the time of the raid.

"We made repeated offers to the boats that they come to the (Israeli) port of Ashdod unload the humanitarian cargo, and we guaranteed to pass all humanitarian items through the crossings to the Gaza Strip. Unfortunately, they rejected our offers and chose the path of confrontation." The head of the Gaza Hamas government, Ismail Haniyeh, condemned the "brutal" Israeli attack.

"We call on the secretary-general of the UN, Ban Ki-moon, to shoulder his responsibilities to protect the safety of the solidarity groups who were on board these ships and to secure their way to Gaza," Haniyeh told The Associated Press.

The violent takeover threatened to deal yet another blow to Israel's international image, already tarnished by war crimes accusations in Gaza and its three-year-old blockade of the impoverished Palestinian territory.

The flotilla began the journey from international waters off the coast of Cyprus on Sunday afternoon after two days of delays.

After nightfall Sunday, three Israeli navy missile boats left their base in Haifa, steaming out to sea to confront the ships. Two hours later, Israel Radio broadcast a recording of one of the missile boats warning the flotilla not to approach Gaza.

"If you ignore this order and enter the blockaded area, the Israeli navy will be forced to take all the necessary measures in order to enforce this blockade," the radio message continued.

This is the ninth time that the Free Gaza movement has tried to ship in humanitarian aid to Gaza since August 2008.

Israel has allowed ships through five times, but has blocked them from entering Gaza waters since a three-week military offensive against Gaza's Hamas rulers in January 2009.

The latest flotilla was the largest to date.

The Geneva-based Defence for Children International (DCI) has collected 100 sworn affadavits from Palestinian children who said they were mistreated by their Israeli captors.

Fourteen of the statements say they were sexually abused or threatened with sexual assault to pressure them into confessions.

Monday, May 31, 2010 The Somali armed group al-Shabab has suspended all relations with the London-based Universal TV for showing sacrilegious cartoons disrespecting Islam's Prophet Mohammad (PBUH).  Spokesman for the group Sheikh Ali Mohamoud Raghe criticized Universal TV on Monday for deliberately showing insulting material targeting Islam's prophet, a Press TV correspondent reported.  The measure taken by the UK-based channel is part of a campaign against Islam, the al-Shabab spokesman explained about the Somali language broadcaster which is viewed across Somalia by satellite.  According to Raghe, the Information Section of al-Shabab has made a decision to cease cooperation with the Somali-language television.  The al-Shabab official went on to call on the broadcaster to apologize for the insult.  Somalia has been lacking a functioning central government since warlords toppled President Siad Barre in 1991.  Al-Shabab fighters control large parts of the capital, Mogadishu and have been fighting over the control of southern regions including the port city of Kismayo.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today expressed his shock at the deadly raid on boats loaded with relief supplies headed for Gaza, calling on Israel to fully explain its actions.

According to media reports, early this morning in international waters, Israeli forces raided the six-ship aid convoy, also carrying hundreds of activists, with more than ten people having been killed.

"I condemn this violence," Mr. Ban <"http://www.un.org/apps/sg/offthecuff.asp?nid=1433">said from Kampala, Uganda, where he presided over the first review conference of the International Criminal Court (<"http://www.icc-cpi.int/Menus/ICC?lan=en-GB">ICC).

"It is vital that there is a full investigation to determine exactly how this bloodshed took place," he said. "I believe Israel must urgently provide a full explanation."

The Security Council is scheduled to meet this afternoon to discuss the incident, and Mr. B
an said that the League of Arab States could also be holding an urgent session on the matter.

Last week, his spokesperson's office strongly urged that "all involved act with a sense of care and responsibility and work for a satisfactory resolution" on the issue of the aid convoy.

The United Nations has repeatedly spoken out against the closure of Gaza and raised concern over the insufficient flow of material into the area to meet basic needs and spur reconstruction. Mr. Ban cautioned in a recent meeting that the closure "creates unacceptable suffering, hurts forces of moderation and empowers extremists."

Also speaking out against today's raid was UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay, who <"http://www.ohchr.org/EN/NewsEvents/Pages/media.aspx?IsMediaPage=true">emphasized that "nothing can justify the appalling outcome of this operation."

Calling for a probe into the incident, she underscored the need for accountability.

"I unequivocally condemn what appears to be
disproportionate use of force, resulting in the killing and wounding of so many people attempting to bring much-needed aid to the people of Gaza, who have now been enduring a blockade for more than three years," Ms. Pillay said.

She called on the Israeli Government to heed the "almost unanimous international view that the continued blockade of Gaza is both inhumane and illegal."

The blockade, the High Commissioner pointed out, "lies at the heart of so many of the problems plaguing the Israel-Palestine situation, as does the impression that the Israeli Government treats international law with perpetual disdain."

Without the blockade, she noted, "there would be no need for flotillas like this."

For his part, Richard Falk, Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the occupied Palestinian territory, <"http://www.ohchr.org/EN/NewsEvents/Pages/DisplayNews.aspx?NewsID=10080&LangID=E">said that "Israel is guilty of shocking behavior by using deadly weapons against unarme

He echoed the calls by the Secretary-General and the High Commissioner for an investigation into today's incident, stressing that it is "essential that those Israelis responsible for this lawless and murderous behavior, including political leaders who issued the orders, be held criminally accountable for their wrongful acts."

Mr. Falk characterized the blockade of Gaza as a "massive form of collective punishment" that is tantamount to a crime against humanity.

"Unless prompt and decisive action is taken to challenge the Israeli approach to Gaza all of us will be complicit in criminal policies that are challenging the survival of an entire beleaguered community," he said.

Describing tobacco as "ugly and deadly," Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today urged women around the world to refrain from the substance even as they were increasingly targeted by advertisers who used gimmicks to associate smoking with beauty and gender liberation.

"Tobacco is not stylish or empowering," the Secretary-General stressed in his message to mark <"http://www.who.int/tobacco/wntd/2010/en/index.html">World No Tobacco Day, whose focus this year is tobacco and gender in a bid to discourage the trend in which more young women are being lured to start smoking.

According to a recent study by the United Nations World Health Organization (<"http://www.who.int/en/">WHO), the number of girls and boys who smoked was about equal in half in the 151 countries where the survey was carried out. More girls used tobacco than boys in some of the countries, including Bulgaria, Chile, Colombia,
 Cook Islands, Croatia, Czech Republic, Mexico, New Zealand, Nigeria and Uruguay, the agency said.

Although fewer than one in 10 women smoke, that still adds up to 200 million women around the world, according to WHO, which also reports that more than 1.5 million women die of smoking-related causes across the world every year. That toll could rise to 2.5 million women by 2030, the Secretary-General warned.

"Governments everywhere must take action to protect women from tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship, as stipulated in the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control," Mr. Ban said. Under the convention, governments are also obligated to protect women from second-hand tobacco smoke, which is responsible for the deaths of 600,000 people each year, nearly two-thirds of them women.

Margaret Chan, the Director-General of WHO, said in her message that women were a major target for the tobacco industry in its effort to recruit new users to replace those who quit or died pr
ematurely from tobacco-related diseases.

"By enforcing the WHO Framework Convention, governments can reduce the toll of fatal and crippling heart attacks, strokes, cancers and respiratory diseases that have become increasingly prevalent among women," said Douglas Bettcher, Director of WHO's Tobacco Free Initiative.

Tobacco use is one of the main causes of preventable death. Overall, the habit kills more than five million people every year, according to WHO.

The international launch of World No Tobacco Day 2010 took place today in Tokyo.

Stop and look your self in the mirror! Summon your sense once if there is any and keep the peace! Chasing and imprisoning the opposition is not only wrong, it is counter productive and will not help you a bit. It will alienate even the less (people) you have!

If you are laughing at Somaliland and saying that you were not understood and you are on target in destroying this country, well the sun has risen and you are naked now!

What you have ungratefully inappreciably done to this country which took you from the 'Qaat market' to the presidential palace is self evidently clear to the people now

Do a favour for yourself, abandon the ungodly activities intended to undermine this national election and come to your sense! Leash the dogs you unleashed in the streets of all and every region of the nation. Somaliland is a country which forgives and no body cashed that more than you did Mr. Riyaale!

The people of UDUB, you can not beat some body with nothing! You can not beat people with no people! You are actually naked. You are empty you need help! Leave the Mother alone and in peace. You are not doing that right now!

You know you have betrayed the people of Somaliland, looted them for so long and in the end left them in the-ledge! Now they left you in a circle where you are chasing your tale none-stop! For that long the people were keeping the peace and the stability of the nation! You thought that was weakness and you manipulated that. It is over! Now you are alone All you have is the public properties -the people's tax. And some crazies! That won't help! Wake up Riyaale!

Now you are trying to bribe the people-the tax payers with their own money! This will not work. Stop this nonsense and come to your sense once! It is time for reflection and restoration and reconstruction of Somaliland. You may not understand this but you better do it and sooner rather than later, for your goodness, for the good of all.

Somaliland was shooting in the dark for so long, or was not even shooting any thing neither in the dark nor in the light! Somaliland was frozen in time with the Remnants! Any way, the Mother was in the wrong hands for so long!

Somaliland collected or accepted a collection of follies of all kinds and insignia from the Remnants of Siyaad Barre! The said follies attracted the local follies to work for them for they are like poles and like poles attract! The pack manifested ignorance of mass destruction and not only that, the Remnants never believed let alone strived for the sovereignty and the recognition of Somaliland. They are none believers in this regard! They believe their belly and pockets! Unfortunately the people thought they are believers! Now every body realized they never were! What a woe-begotten country for her sorry superlative!

Somaliland is a country punished for her big heart, for her blanket forgiveness with no questions asked! –forgiveness is good but not to ask questions relating to certain people for certain cases is unwise, and now the proof of this is apparent on the face of Somaliland! Riyaale wouldn't have been in our midst had we asked him the valid question-"where are the hundreds of missing people when you were the chief spy there in Berbera?"

Somaliland has been cruelly inflicted a fatal damage in all aspects-morally, socially, financially and politically in the hands of the government of the remnants heading by Riyaale the ex-NSS agent in Berbera where three ships of deported Somalilanders are still missing! However, it is not time for Retribution; it is time for forgiveness- if asked for, and after answering some questions, this time!

It is time for Reflection and Restoring Somaliland, what ever is left of her; but that is if the remnants understand it and cooperate for the sake of Somaliland

I am calling them to understand this virtue before time runs out of them!

I am calling them to refrain sabotaging and undermining the peace and the process of democracy in this June 26, 2010 election in Somaliland

I am calling them particularly Awil and Riyaale to stop the secret meetings intended to spread the malevolence against the peace and stability of Somaliland in which, ironically they happened to rule her and supposed to uphold the law of the land.

What you are mending in secret is no body's favour because this time, you can not get away with it! The conscience of the nation which was on indefinite leave of absence is back and active this time!

Again I am calling the (Riyaale government) evil doers not to try to derail and disrupt the process of democracy. They already started that in numerous places in the country, they closed a number of ballot stations and took away the boxes contained the personal IDs of the voters! They also terrorized the student staff working there and put some of them in jail arbitrarily! They are buying the voting IDs with people's money to sabotage and undermine the integrity of the June 26 elections because they don't have people to vote for them.

They are scared of what they have done to Mother Somaliland during their tenure. To cover up there crimes they are in a mission to create conflicts and delays and even wars 'God forbid' the clan skirmishes created for de-railing the election process are happening in "Buhuudle" and around it as we speak!

They are afraid because of what they have stolen from the nation, what they have done to Mother Somaliland. However; they better know and understand that Somaliland is a country where forgiveness and not revenge worked and can work now!

They better know that Somaliland was a success story of consensus compromise and common ground. The Remnants who seem scared to death to day better revisit and reflect how they came back to Somaliland when the Dictator they were supporting was defeated, and how they came to power! That happened because Somaliland forgave them in a blanket amnesty!

Remnants need not be scared provided they keep the peace and call off the tantrums, the hoodlums and the net headed 'Goolwadayaal'of all ages and insignia.

Now if they leave Somaliland alone and stop creating conflicts and wars, they may reap the virtue of forgiveness, once again, for the second time here in Somaliland! Only in Somaliland and no where else!

"An amicable resolution and settlement is virtue. Such settlement is best even though mean-souls are swayed by greed but if ye do good and practice justice and self restraint Allah is well acquainted with all ye do. If and when one does evil or wrongs his own soul but afterwards seeks Allah's forgiveness he will find. Allah oft-forgiving, most merciful" [Al Nisa, Ch 5, V.110]

"Help ye one another in righteousness and piety. Help ye not one another in sin and rancour. Fear Allah: for Allah is strict in punishment"

Remnants better seek the forgiveness of the people of Somaliland, but first they must stop sabotaging her and undermining her. Somaliland forgives when that is due.

Somaliland will be strict in your punishment if you remnants do not respond to this Godly call of reconciliation and righting the wrongs you did to this country by simply letting this election go peacefully. I think that is not too much. Leave the election process take its course. Leave Somaliland alone and you may be forgiven. Simple and compassionate!

Somalilander have a future. In many ways, it will not look like our past. What is happening righ now is a revolution, a political, economic, and cultural revolution. There is no choice about it.So, what are we to do? Keep expressing dissent by marching and protesting in the streets? Keep signing petitions on the Internet? Keep demanding impeachment of Riyaale? Keep reading and writing angry diatribes on progressive websites? Keep voting for mainstream politicians from the three major parties, hoping for a new political ?.Such activities release anger, but are largely placebo self-medications, unlikely to provide the permanent solutions our nation needs. Protests serve more as entertainment for the nation than a force to tear down the rotten system. Scale is a problem. Maybe if half million angry Somaliland sat down peacefully in the streets all around the Goverment, defying police action for many days, just maybe the system would crack. Protests must have a revolutionary character.

They must induce fear into the hearts of smug and delusional power elites – like Riyaale,Ciro,Warancade,Cawil.As we know the real needs are structural reforms that combat the major societal delusions that are driving Somaliland downhill. We must attack the root causes of problems rather than provide temporary relief or cover-up of symptoms. Delusional patriotism is tougher to remedy. To revitalize Somaliland democacy we must have a national dialogue.We should sit down right now and have a conversation, between people and Goverment and political party.

I mean it more literally: Are we, as a nation, still capable of talking with one another about the issues that confront us? Or have shouting, extreme polarization, pitched political battle, and unshakeable mistrust in the motives of anyone who disagrees with us sabotaged our capacity for reasoned discourse? I don't think we're that far gone, at least, not yet. But we're certainly on dangerous ground. Anyone who cares about the dialogue of democracy ought to be very concerned right now.We all need, to recognize our own fallibility, to understand that our own particular perspective on a problem need not be the only one. In fact, it's helpful always to keep in mind that we might be wrong. "The spirit of liberty is the spirit that is not too sure it is right." When people of opposing viewpoints are willing to give one another the benefit of the doubt– or at least to treat one another with respect– then resolving differences becomes much easier.

At the same time, it helps to keep an eye on the proper target: resolving differences and reconciling views, rather than winning at all costs. Our system was not set up to further a particular set of policy goals, it was designed to provide a way for Somalilands to come together to decide what those goals ought to be and how to reach them. That means learning how to search for compromises in which everyone is at least a partial winner, and understanding from the start that political differences may be stark, but this does not make them irreconcilable.For the goal, after all, is to serve the national interest and focus on the common good, asking ourselves not what's good for any one of us, but what's good for the country. When we do this, it becomes possible to focus on a rival's ideas, not his motivations or personal shortcomings. And that, in turn, makes it possible to have a genuine conversation in which opponents search for commonalities, and in particular talk about the concerns they share.

At its best, creative dialogue is the very heart of a democratic system. It increases mutual understanding, establishes respect among adversaries, stimulates fresh thinking and new perspectives, and builds the consensus for which Somaliland so desperately earn. It is not beyond our capabilities to have that kind of dialogue, but as a society, we have to make it clear that we want it, and hold to account those who get in its way. Our obligation is to strengthen those forces in our society that promote a reasoned dialogue, and to discourage the forces that make it more difficult.Yes indeed let us fight corruption at our footsteps and also at the power abuse. Unless we do this our attempts to reduce our chronic power abuse and corruption will just lead to nothing. The impoverished majority in most African countries are denied their constitutional rights.
