Jury Convicts Man In Tacoma Cab Driver's Death

A jury convicted Jaycee Fuller of killing cab driver Mohamud Ahmed during a robbery in Tacoma in March of 2009.

It took the jury of nine men and three women about two and a half hours to find 32-year-old Fuller guilty of killing Ahmed.

KIRO 7 reporter Kevin McCarty said Fuller shook his head and mouthed expletive words as he heard the guilty verdict.

"I feel like he was railroaded, he was assumed guilty. They didn't test all the evidence, that was obvious – two-and-a-half hours out," said Fuller's mother Susan Barnett.

During the trial, Pierce County Prosecutor Mark Lindquist said Fuller was motivated by anger at foreigners he blamed for taking American jobs. He said Fuller targeted 22-year-old Ahmed, who moved to the U.S. from Somalia several years before his death.

Ahmed was found killed on a side street in Tacoma on March 8.

Police linked Fuller to the crime when they found a cap near the crime scene. Prosecutors said DNA tests revealed traces of Ahmed's blood on the cap as well as Fuller's DNA and hair.

Using a GPS record of Ahmed's last fare, detectives said they then backtracked the route to a restaurant on 6th Avenue in Tacoma. There police said they found surveillance video showing Fuller wearing the same cap just a short time before the murder.

Lindquist said Fuller not only planned a robbery that night, but also a murder.
