In-group clashes kill 12 in Somalia

The Somali troops on patrol on the outskirts of Mogadishu.
At least 12 people, mostly civilians, have been killed and over 20 others injured in heavy clashes between two groups of Somali government troops in the restive capital Mogadishu.

Witnesses and officials said the fighting erupted in the capital's Hodan and Hawlwadag districts, where the forces exchanged heavy gunfire, killing seven civilians, four soldiers and wounding more than 20 others.

Afrah Ali Afrah, a Somali commander, confirmed the fighting between the forces but accused one group of being phony and robbers.

The fighting comes a day after Somali President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh
Ahmed opened the training session for more than 1,300 soldiers in Mogadishu.

The forces are to be deployed across the bullet-riddled capital to fight the powerful insurgents.

The Horn of Africa nation has been marred by years of deadly civil war that erupted shortly after the ouster of former president Mohammed Siad Bare.
