Hargeisa, Somaliland (Somaliland Globe)- Somaliland authorities have arrested and detained today a journalist who has reported for Somaliland.Org, a Somali language news website and other domestic-oriented news providers.

The journalist, Foosi Saleeban Aw-Biindhe, was arrested in Burao, Somaliland's second largest city, by the police on the order of Burao governor, Jama Abdillahi Biin.

It is believed that journalist Aw-Biindhe was arrested for "uncovering a major corruption scandal within the governor's office".

Mr. Aw-Biindhe's arrest coincided at a time two Horyaal Radio journalists are still languishing in jail for "trumped up charges of inciting violence between two clans".

The Somaliland government has lately been trying to muzzle the critical voice of the independent press ahead of the presidential election on 27 September.

Under Rayale's government, journalists continue to work under a climate of fear and intimidation to report the facts on the ground to the world.

The Somaliland.Org is a sister online news publication of the English language version, Somaliland Globe. We also partner with Horyaal Radio, an independent Somali language radio with On Air and Online presence that is also based in Hargeisa, Somaliland.
