A number of former heads of states that include former Zambian president Kenneth Kaunda, former Mozambican president Joaquim Chissano, Indian National Congress president Sonia Gandhi, former Nigerian vice-president Atiku Abubakar and the Reverend Jesse Jackson have been invited to grace the occasion.

According to Zuma's spokesperson, Lakela Kaunda, other guests would come from India, China and other countries with parties that were close to the ANC.

5000 delegates are expected to grace the inauguration event. Another 30 000 people are expected to witness the event from the south lawns of the Union Buildings. The DA has expressed concern about the cost of the event, which is reportedly R75-million (USD 9,024,522), excluding security costs.

The opposition party said it was inappropriate in the face of the enormous challenges facing the country as well as Zuma's own campaign commitment to a more austere approach to governance
