On authenticity of a letter from Lord Eric Avebury letter ...It is real

On authenticity of a letter from Lord Eric Avebury letter published on Somaliland Org

Given Somaliland's current political climate, some have cast doubt over the authenticity of Lord Avebury's letter on recommendation of Somaliland Mediation Committee, posted on Somaliland.org on 7 May 2009.  They have maintained that the said letter was written, not by Lord Avebury, but by Somaliland Armchair politicians based in Western countries with sinister political motives.

I wrote to Lord Eric Avebury to find out whether he did indeed write the said letter. Below is the copy of my email exchange with him. You be the judge.

As I could not find any references of this letter on your blog, I would be grateful if you could confirm whether or not the said letter is indeed from you. I look forward hearing from you.

Dear Mark,

As you will have seen, Somaliland President Riyale and the opposition parties have accepted the agreement brokered by the Mediation Committee.  Could we or the EU now ask President Riyale what is the timescale for his government to introduce the legislation necessary to implement the agreement, including the prohibition on further extension of the President's term of office, and access by all parties to the publicly owned media, and what independent monitoring will be provided in the legislation, to ensure that the agreement is carried out? Subject to the international community's satisfaction with these arrangements, what technical and financial help do you think could be offered for the elections, by the EU or any other agency?

Yours Sincerely,

Eric
