Khalifa and Mohammed Pledge
1,200 Houses for Palestinians

ABU DHABI - The UAE moved quickly to help reduce the aggravation of the suffering in Gaza with pledges for 1,200 houses, starting a nationwide telethon for funds and, sending relief aid by land to Palestinian areas affected by the Israeli military aggression.

UAE President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, have pledged 600 houses each, for Palestinians whose houses were demolished during the trouble in Gaza.Earlier, a nationwide telethon to raise funds in support of Palestinian people in Gaza got underway on Friday.

The live TV and radio campaign, which started at 2pm, raised Dh315 million.The 'Relief the Palestinian People' fund-raising telethon is being staged in implementation of instructions from Shaikh Khalifa, Shaikh Mohammed and General Shaikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces.The charity drive in solidarity with the Gazans was launched by Shaikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister of the UAE and President of the UAE Red Crescent Authority (UAERCA).Meanwhile, a UAE relief convoy arrived in the troubled areas outside Palestine en route to the Rafah border crossing to deliver urgent humanitarian assistance to the people affected by current events in Gaza.

UAE Ambassador to Egypt, Ahmed Al Za'abi said the 50 truck convoy had 300 tonnes of various essential relief supplies bought in Egypt.Dr Saleh Al Taie, adviser to Red Crescent Authority (RCA) secretary-general, said the shipment is the second phase of the RCA relief programme to Gaza since the eruption of trouble.In the first phase, the medical supplies were brought in the Palestinian territories through UN agencies, the official added.
