Muslims have been warned not to give money to beggars during Ramadan, following reports they are being targeted by fraudsters.
Westminster Council fears con artists are posing as Muslims by wearing prayer shawls and by praying on mats in the street to gain cash.
Although the Muslim community has a strong tradition of helping charities, the giving of alms is even more significant during Ramadan, which lasts for a month.
Cabinet member for community protection, councillor Daniel Astaire, said: "It is both immoral and unacceptable for people to prey on the generosity and benevolence of the Muslim community at this or any time and we would advise never to give money to beggars in the street."
