In the aftermath of the fall of Muammar Gaddafi in Libya, and the turmoil precipitated by the Arab Spring, as well as in the context of on-going instability in Mali, concerns are growing that a combination of political and humanitarian crises in the Sahel are attracting multiple armed criminal and terrorist groups. These include arms, drugs and people smugglers operating undetected along remote routes.
Dr Reuben Brigety will discuss how the US government can engage with the countries of the Western Sahel and other concerned parties in support of efforts to combat insecurity and organized crime in the region.
