HARGEISA (Somalilandsun) – The much awaited International funding for local elections is imminent following the arrival of a group of donors.
The president H.E. Ahmed Mahmoud Silanyo hosted at the presidency in Hargeisa a delegation from an international committee of Somaliland election donors headed by Mr. Douglas Meurs, the Somali/Somaliland Charge de affairs at the American embassy in Nairobi.
According to a press statement released from the presidency, the visiting delegation was briefed on status pertaining to preparations for local council elections. The six member delegation received the briefing from the president in the presence of vice president Abdirahman Sayli and cabinet ministers.
The government revealed that the political parties registration and verification committee-PPR&VC has completed verification of potential political groups thus registering 6 out of the 15 that had shown an interest. The delegation was also informed that the procedures followed by the PPR&VC were pursuant to legislation approved by parliament.
The election funder's delegation was also informed that the newly registered 6 political groups have been forwarded to the National Election Commission-NEC where they join the 3 national parties thus 9 political groups as contestants in local elections. The delegation was also informed that NEC will announce local council elections dates once arrangements are finalized.
In conclusion the press statement signed by Abdilahi Mohamed Dahir Ukuse presidential spokesperson said that the purpose of the delegation's visit was to ascertain status pertaining to the forthcoming elections
