Somaliland: The Consortium of the Parties (Daladda Ururada)

Somaliland: The Consortium of the Parties (Daladda Ururada)

Ms Fozia H Aden Chairperson-Consortium of the Parties

A PRESS RELEASE

The political parties that were given the provisional registration as new political parties but were illegally denied the full registration that enables them to contest the local government elections have met together and have decided to form a consortium – The Consortium of the Parties (in Somali "Daladda Ururada"). The Consortium will organize the activities of the parties and promote their cause peacefully and legally.

The Consortium has rejected the decision that the Parties Registration Committee reached on 20 April 2012 and has decided to challenge it legally and politically. It will undertake all appropriate activities such as raising public awareness about the ineptitude, fraud, and haughtiness of the Committee, holding debates on the laws, management, and results of the process, and challenging the decision of the Committee in court.

Moreover, it will expose the edgy and unreasonable reactions of the government to the lawful protests that the parties organized after the announcement of the Committee's decision. Its reactions have utterly violated the basic rights of the parties that are enshrined in the Somaliland Constitution and in the Human Rights Charter.

The Consortium believes that the coordination of the activities of its partners and their collaboration is an important contribution to the development of democratic process in Somaliland. Unfortunately, these processes are often inhibited or abused by some of the major participants, and the inhibitions and abuses are not checked, ending up with a flawed and fettered political system.

This culture of political leniency and sloppiness can no longer be tolerated and must be brought to an end if we want to build a healthy democratic system that protects freedom and fairness.

The consortium is adamant to continue its work until the parties obtain their rights, correcting the culture of denying people's rights through manipulations and intimidations.

Its members are:

1. Fawzia Yusuf Haji Adan NDB Chairperson

2. Ibrahim Abdillahi Hussein UDHIS Member

3. Ahmed Sandon Hassan JAMHUURIGA Member

4. Nur Farah Hussein GURMAD Member

5. Mustafa Abdillahi Jama HORYAAL Member
