Somaliland: HORYAAL dismisses Protest demonstrations
Group say it will seek legal redressBy: Yusuf M Hasan
HARGEISA (Somalilandsun) – Proposed nationwide demonstrations in protest against the decision by the Political Parties Registration and Verification Committee-PPR&VC have been denounced.
The proposed demonstrations which are being organized by 8 of the prospective political groups that were disqualified by the PPR&VC on Friday are to be held in all major cities of the country if successful.
In a press statement the HORYAAL political asked its members not to participate in the demonstrations as they were illegal and will ultimately achieve nothing apart from creating mischief and mayhem. The statement signed by HORYAAL chairman Mr. Mohamed Yusuf Ali Gurey informed members that the group will pursue redress through established legal channels and not demonstrations.
He said that though his group does not agree with the PPR&VC decision and will not abide by it urged members restrain while legal avenues of redress are being explored and categorically insisted that they not participate in any demonstrations.
According to the PPR&VC only six out of 15 political groups fulfilled all requirements for official registration namely: WADANI, DALSAN, RAYS, UMMADDA, NASIYE and HAQSOOR. These groups will now join the three national parties of UCID, Kulmiye and UDUB to contest for local council elections to be held in the country soon.
HORYAAL was among the 9 groups that failed to meet the requirements for registration as political groups; others are NUUR, DAMAL, NDP, BADBAADO, GURMAD, UDHIS, JAMHUURIYA and SSCD. Though a fall out within the ranks is now visible the disqualification of the nine groups has elicited heated debates with some insinuating that the decision was based on political exigencies and not facts as they stand.
If the proposed protest demonstrations actually take place possibilities of national security being impinged upon are obvious. This is an eventuality that is not desirable at this particular time when the country is under very close scrutiny by the international community due to its reversal on decision to participate in talks with the Mogadishu based TFG.
On the other hand it would help ease the losing group's pain of missed chance for political glory if the PPR&VC could make public documentation that led to approval of the 6 and disqualification of the 9 political groups. This undertaking will surely put an end to persisting accusations directed at the PPR&VC for partiality thus redeem it in the eyes of the public as well as assuage the hurt egos of the losers.
