The Famine in Somalia, and How to Help
By NICHOLAS KRISTOF
My Sunday column is about the famine in Somalia, threatening 750,000 lives in the coming months. I’ll probably have one more column from Dadaab Refugee Camp, and I should make the point that at Dadaab the conditions aren’t so bad, relatively speaking. The problem for the refugees is the starvation in Somalia and the difficulties getting to Dadaab.
I’m sure readers will want to know how to help. Most aid groups are operating in Dadaab, but very few are operating effectively in the Shabab-controlled areas of Somalia. In Dadaab, I visited projects of CARE and the International Rescue Committee, and there are many more active there. Here are some lists of organizations compiled by The Washington Post, MSNBC News and ABC News.
I’d welcome your comments on the column, or suggestions about how to help.
