Declaration of Adal (Awdal, Selel, Gebiley) Communities Against Rayale Regime’s Greedy Attempt to Grab Sa’adin and Eebat Islands

Declaration of Adal (Awdal, Selel, Gebiley) Communities Against Rayale Regime's Greedy Attempt to Grab Sa'adin and Eebat Islands

We the undersigned elders, intellectuals and community members, who are descendants of Awdal, Selel, and Gebiley areas, and currently residing in the USA and Canada. We hereby issuing this declaration that is pertinent to the greedy attempt to grab the historical islands of Sa'adin and Ebaad (Sacadin & Ceebaad) just off  the Zeila coast.

We have strong conviction along the lines that these historical islands are to be preserved and sustained. The islands make a huge diversity of all kinds of organisms. Among the organism residing in the two islands are rare animals, birds, grass, insects, micro-organisms, giant fungi, plants including rare ones, that are to be protected from the ravages of man's devastation. The Islands of Saadin and Cebaat are also the center for the ingratiatory birds. Every years millions of birds transit through the two islands. The diversity of both flora and fauna in the two islands is unprecedented. Moreover, the islands are the only places in the vicinity of the city of Saylac that has huge reservoirs of fresh water. Therefore, keeping up and preserving the natural ecosystem of these islands is paramount.

We wholeheartedly support the position of the lead Awdal/Selel/Gabiley chiefs and sultans such as Mr. Ibrahim j. Samater, Mr. Dhawal, and Mr. Bade who went to Saylac for a fact finding mission but impudently prohibited from going to the island by the Rayaale regime. In light of the above listed postulates, we state the following:

1. We concur with the position of the Awdal/Selel/Gebiley chiefs, sultans, elders and community members who recently visited Saylac for a fact finding mission, in order to check on the validity of reports saying the historical islands were sold to one individual/individuals from Djibouti.

2. Any kind of development in these islands will disturb the ecological balance that has been preserved for 100s of years. Development activities or human movement and habitation of the islands will surely cause irreversible ecosystem devastation and destruction.

3. We believe that the decision to sell these historical islands represents a myopic, and parochial short time personal gain with a very long term consequences.

4. History will never forgives and forgets any destruction visited upon the natural habitat and the ecosystem of this island. It is worth noting that the said fragile ecosystem has been preserved by multiple rulers of the two islands for nearly one thousand years. The islands ecosystems have been protected and pressured since the reigns of kings Ahmed Gurey and Sa'adin to today.

5. Local communities whose livelihood depends on fishing around the island must have unfettered access to the island. Currently the Rayaale regime have stopped these indigenous people from fishing in the area around the islands.

6. We appeal to Djibouti government to help in the process of not soaking the seeds of hostilities among the communities in awdal/salal due to a corrupt Somaliland administration.

7. We request from president Rayaale's to follow the  feet steps of the late president of Somaliland his Excellency Mohamed H. Ibrahim Egal, who rebuffed similar offers from Djibouti authorities and their business people before.

8. We hope the government Djibouti to refrain from anything adding to any hostile environment, that may be created and flared up by the corrup tRayaale regime, that makes a career out of feasting on peoples' differences.

9. We would also like to appeal to the United nations in general and UNESCO in particular to intervene, and declare the two island of "Saadin and Ceebat" historical sites that are to be preserved.

10. Again we are all expressing our utmost protest and disapproval of Rayaale's decision, to sell the Islands of Sa'adin and Eebat to an individual or individuals from Djibouti. We would like to see the Rayaale administration change their wrong headed decision now. The Rayaale regime must know what they are doing today is a gross mistake with historical proportions, that may trigger seismic shifts in the ecosystem equilibrium around the islands of Saadin, Cebaat and beyond. Last but not the least we will not rule out to take legal action against Rayaale and his regime in the international circles including the International court of justice in the Hague.
