Spreading joy in Somaliland
School furniture, clothes, medical equipment, computers and much more since 2003 was chartered on long road from Varde to Somaliland in East Africa, thanks to a group of seven people who call themselves Somaliland Committee.
Periodically fills Committee a large container with different equipment, and shall have chartered it to the hard-ridden Somaliland.
- Between Samvirke pays transportation costs, which stands at 48.000-50.000 dollars per. container, so it is clear that the content has to be something that can really be used, says Knud Glud from Somaliland Committee.
The 76-year-old former civil defense director and major from Varde was recently even in Somaliland to visit some of the orphanages and hospitals as the last 4-5 years have been delighted by the so far 15 batches from Varde. By itself, he had Ahmed Abdi Jama, who himself comes from Somaliland, but has lived in Varde since 1990.
- Of course our help only a small drop compared to the total needs, but it makes a difference for the schools and institutions, we help. The alternative is nothing, he notes.
Containers from Varde has been filled with, among other school furniture from the old Sct. Jacobi Skole and waste computers from Esbjerg Business College.
Knud Glud has since 1982 been involved in relief work in Poland, Lithuania and now in Somaliland.
- I think it is much more meaningful than playing golf and bridge, Knud Glud notes with a smile.
The next container to Somaliland is being sent out during January. This time will Somaliland Committee, among other things to concentrate on sending clothes, tents and kitchen equipment.
- Somaliland Committee receives much like clothes from people who want to help. It can be returned to Employment Center, Håndværkervej 11 of Varde says Knud Glud who even receives and retrieves clothing to Somaliland. He can be contacted on tel 7522 2383.
