Shahid Malik: profile of the justice minister: MPs' expenses

he Dewsbury MP, the first Muslim to be made a minister, oversees the implementation of the Freedom of Information Act within his Whitehall department.

Mr Malik, 41, a graduate of Durham University, was elected MP for Dewsbury in 2005. He was given the job of international development minister in 2007, and promoted to the justice ministry in October last year.

The MP lives in London with his glamorous wife Sundus, a trainee solicitor whom he married last February.

On Tuesday, Mr Malik, who refuses to take his full ministerial salary, called for a "complete overhaul" of the parliamentary expenses system. "We cannot allow a system that permits taxpayers' money to fund housekeepers, moat maintenance and repairs to luxury swimming pools and tennis courts to continue. It grieves me to see multi-millionaires claiming thousands for repairs to their country estates while many hard-working families face an uncertain future."
