Somali Parliament Endorses Sharia Law

Cabinet approved implementation of Sharia last month in effort to appease Islamist insurgents
Somalia's parliament has voted unanimously to implement Islamic Sharia law.At a meeting in the capital Mogadishu Saturday, all 343 lawmakers present voted to approve Sharia as a basis for Somalia's legal system. The Somali Cabinet approved the implementation of Sharia last month in an effort to appease Islamist insurgents.Islamic clerics and some of the more moderate Islamist militias have welcomed the government's efforts, but the hardline group al-Shabab is unlikely to be satisfied with the measures or halt its attacks on the government. Al-Shabab controls much of southern and central Somalia after a two-year insurgency, and has moved to impose its own strict form of Islamic law in those areas.Somalia's government has so far been unable to assert control over more than a few blocks of Mogadishu
