Nawaz by-poll disqualification setback for democracy: PM

LAHORE: The disqualification of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif from contesting by-elections is a great setback for democracy, Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani said on Saturday.

Talking to reporters at the Allama Iqbal International Airport after his arrival in Lahore, Gilani said that the government believed in the independence of judiciary and the rule of law. He said that the government was committed to the reinstatement of the sacked judges.

The prime minister said, "The draft of the constitutional package has been sent to the coalition partners and it will be tabled in the parliament after they reach consensus on the issue.

The parliament is a supreme authority and any decision about the constitutional package will be taken there, Gilani said. He said that the federal government would support the NWFP government if it were to take action against the militants. agencies
