Somaliland: Army graduates first commando battalion

DANAB-DARAWEINE (Somalilandsun) - The national army has graduated the first contigent of soldiers with specialized commandos training.

The commandos who graduated at a colourful ceremony undertook their training at the Danab forces academy in dararweine district for a period of six months.

According to Major Ahmed Tanzania the armed forces training commander, the battalion undertook training pertinent to sea, air and land based specialized warfare techniques.

Major Ahmed that the commando battalion will be utilized in various national security concerns like the fight on piracy, anti-terrorism as well as engagement with secessionists.

Also at the graduation ceremony which was attended by a multitude of people was the Army chief of Staff Gen Shakale who praised the graduates for having persevered the harsh commando training.

The general told the commandos that it was now upon their shoulder to spearhead the defence of the nation especially as pertains to some secessionist elements that are believed to have received similar training from international terrorist organizations.

While thanking the training instructors for their superb job Gen. Shakale asked them to explore avenues that will allow training duration to be reduced from six to two months.

This is the first official function of Gen Shakale as Chief of Staff following his recent appointment which saw his predecessor Gen. Jidiif fired after less than 90 days in office.
