If my husband takes a second wife, will I be rewarded?
Firstly:
We do not know of any saheeh evidence which refers to the reward mentioned, but al-Tabaraani narrated from Ibn Mas’ood that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Allaah has decreed jealousy for women and jihad for men, so whoever bears that with patience out of faith and in the hope of reward will have a reward like that of a martyr.” This hadeeth was classed as da’eef (weak) by al-Albaani in Da’eef al-Jaami’ al-Sagheer, no. 1626.
Secondly:
A woman’s being patient in obeying her husband is one of the means of entering Paradise, as it says in the hadeeth narrated by Ibn Hibbaan: “If a woman offers her five daily prayers and fasts her month (i.e., Ramadaan) and guards her chastity and obeys her husband, it will be said to her: ‘Enter Paradise from whichever of the gates of Paradise you wish.’” This hadeeth was classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami’ al-Sagheer, no. 660.
Her patience in putting up with her husband’s marrying a second wife will bring a special reward over and above that, for several reasons:
1 – Her husband’s marrying another wife is regarded as a test and trial for her, and if she bears that with patience she will have the reward for being patient in the face of a trial, as Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“Only those who are patient shall receive their reward in full, without reckoning”
[al-Zumar 39:10]
According to the hadeeth: “No fatigue, nor disease, nor sorrow, nor sadness, nor hurt, nor distress befalls a Muslim, not even a thorn that pricks him, but Allaah will expiate his sins thereby.”
Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 5642; Muslim, 2573, from the hadeeth of Abu Sa’eed and Abu Hurayrah.
Al-Tirmidhi (2399) narrated from Abu Hurayrah that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Trials will continue to befall the believer, man or woman, concerning himself, his child and his wealth, until he meets Allaah with no sin on him.” Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami’, no. 5815.
2 – If a woman accepts that and treats her husband and the other wife well, she will have the reward of al-muhsineen. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“Verily, he who fears Allaah with obedience to Him (by abstaining from sins and evil deeds, and by performing righteous good deeds), and is patient, then surely, Allaah makes not the reward of the Muhsinoon (good‑doers) to be lost”
[Yoosuf 12:90]
“Is there any reward for good other than good?”
[al-Rahmaan 55:60]
“And verily, Allaah is with the Muhsinoon (good-doers)”
[al-‘Ankaboot 29:69]
3 – If she feels angry because of that, but she controls her anger – and controlling one's tongue is part of controlling one's anger – Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“…who repress anger, and who pardon men; verily, Allaah loves Al-Muhsinoon (the good‑doers)”
[Aal ‘Imraan 3:134]
This reward is in addition to the woman’s reward for obeying her husband under ordinary circumstances.
A wise woman should accept whatever Allaah decrees for her, and she should realize that her husband’s marrying another woman is something permissible, so she should not object to it. It may be that this (second) marriage will make him more chaste and prevent him from doing something haraam.
It is very unfortunate that some women object less to their husbands doing haraam things than to their marrying another woman in a permissible manner. This is a sign of their lack of reason and religious commitment.
Women should follow the good example of the wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and his companions, who were patient and sought reward even though many of them felt jealous. If your husband goes ahead and takes a second wife then you have to be patient and content and treat him well so that you can attain the reward of the patient and the doers of good.
Note that this life is the life of trials and tests, and how quickly it ends. So congratulations to the one who is patient in obeying Allaah in this life until he attains eternal delight in the gardens of Paradise.
And Allaah knows best.
AU wants Somalia declared no fly zone

By Cyprian Musoke
THE Peace and Security Council of the African Union (AU) has asked the UN to impose a no-fly zone on Somalia and block sea ports through which foreign groups supply logistics to the insurgents.
Eritrea, in particular, has been accused of serving as a conduit for arms, logistics and foreign fighters to the Islamist group Al Shabaab in Somalia.
On December 23 last year, the UN Security Council imposed an arms embargo on Eritrea and vowed to slap financial and travel restrictions on its leaders for arming Al Shabaab.
The resolution, which was introduced by Uganda, passed by a vote of 13 to 1 in the 15-nation council, with Libya voting "no" and China abstaining.
At its meeting held in Addis Ababa on Thursday, the council hailed all the countries and institutions providing support to the AU peace keeping mission, especially Uganda and Burundi, calling on other member states to join.
Uganda and Burundi are the only countries that have contributed soldiers to the AU peace keeping force, known as AMISOM, but the 5,000 strong force falls short of the 8,000 soldiers required to secure the capital Mogadishu alone.
The AU council stressed that the deterioration of the situation in Somalia is proof of the increased internationalisation of the conflict.
It, therefore, called for the deployment of UN staff to help stabilise the situation and support the reconstruction of the country.
"The council noted that the current support remains below what is required on the ground and called for more mobilisation of the international community," an AU release said over the weekend.
The group reiterated its support to the Somali government and asked for more support, including military, to enable the government neutralise the armed element and deliver basic services.
In that respect, it welcomed the recent commissioning of eight battalions of the Somali security forces, who had been trained by AMISOM.
It also welcomed the completion of the induction course for the AMISOM police trainers from Ghana, Nigeria, Sierra Leone and Uganda who will in turn train the Somali police.
The council again condemned the acts of violence and terrorism by Islamist militant groups Al Shabaab and Hizbul Islam "with the active support of foreign elements in defiance of the peace overtures of the government and the international community".
It reiterated its call to all the Somali parties to join the peace process without any precondition and delay.
It also demanded that armed opposition groups ensure unrestricted access and assistance to needy civilians in areas under their control.
Meanwhile, World Food Programme has reported that Al Shabaab militants are stopping convoys of food reaching more than 360,000 displaced people.
Al Shabaab says World Food Programme is ruining local farming by forcing Somalis to rely on imports. But the UN says Somali farmers cannot supply enough food.

Naif calls for peaceful solution to Iran crisis
Naif calls for peaceful solution to Iran crisis
By P.K. ABDUL GHAFOUR | ARAB NEWS
JEDDAH: Saudi Arabia reiterated on Sunday its stance on the nuclear standoff between Iran and the West, saying that the issue should be resolved peacefully.
However, it emphasized the need for ensuring the Middle East region was free of weapons of mass destruction.
"The Kingdom supports a peaceful solution to the issue," said Second Deputy Premier and Minister of Interior Prince Naif, adding that Iran should abide by all international regulations and agreements to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons.
Speaking to Qatar's Al-Sharq Arabic newspaper, Prince Naif highlighted Saudi Arabia's pioneering experience in combating terror.
"Many countries wanted to benefit from our experience in this area," he said, adding that the fight against terrorism would continue.
"The fight between right and wrong and good and evil is an eternal one. Crimes will continue to take place as long as man is there," the prince said. However, he said Saudi Arabia has been successful in containing the evil of terrorism.
He said the Arab anti-terrorism agreement was a big achievement.
"It was an early warning given by Arab countries but it did not receive the proper international response."
Prince Naif said it was difficult for a single country to control cross border crimes, adding that it needs the cooperation of others.
Referring to the human rights issue, the minister said many parties raise this issue against others to realize their vested interests.
"In accordance with the Basic Law of Governance, Saudi Arabia is committed to protect human rights."
The Kingdom recently passed a law that prevents human trafficking. Saudi Arabia has been elected to the UN Human Rights Council for two consecutive terms.
"This demonstrates the Kingdom's good human rights record," he said.
Speaking about the new joint GCC projects such as railway and electricity schemes linking member countries, he said: "These projects would help strengthen the strong relations between the GCC people, which is based on religion, history, neighborhood and family ties that are stronger than technological links."
He said GCC leaders wanted greater integration between the member countries, especially in security matters.
He said there was no foreign pressure on GCC countries to change iqama, sponsorship and citizenship regulations. "The new changes in regulations came not because of any foreign pressure but because of our own decisions inspired by the teachings of Islam."
Prince Naif, who chaired a meeting of the Saudi-Qatari Coordination Council in Doha recently, underscored the deep-rooted historic relations between the two GCC neighbors.
He said the bilateral agreements signed during the Doha meeting reflected the desire of the two countries to strengthen their ties in all areas.
He asked Palestinian groups to abide by the reconciliation agreement they signed in Makkah to strengthen their unity. "We hope that Palestinians would listen to reason before yielding to emotions, and would give priority to achieving their higher interests over their vested interests."
Prince Naif said the Arab peace initiative, proposed by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah, was the best plan to realize peace in the Middle East.
"King Abdullah has warned Israel, while addressing a summit in Kuwait, that the Arab peace initiative would not remain on the table forever. The message is very clear and Israel should know that," the prince said.

Confusion has reigned in Nigeria as to who is really in charge after the sudden return of the oil-rich nation's ailing President Umaru Yar'Adua. Despite an official clarification that acting President Goodluck Jonathan would remain in charge while Mr.Yar'Adua continues to recuperate, many Nigerians believe the assertive wife of the long-absent president, Turai Yar'Adua, is now the main power behind the presidency. Presidential spokesman Olusegun Adeniyi says such insinuations are incorrect.
"When you now read in the [news]papers that Turai takes over,Turai is in charge, all these things are not correct and I think they are very, very unfair to the first lady at a time she is nursing her husband. So there is no such thing. You don't expect the acting president to report to the first lady. It is abnormal and it won't happen," he said.
Mr. Yar'Adua returned to Nigeria on Wednesday and apparently left the airport in an ambulance escorted by a heavily armed military guard. He spent three months at a Saudi hospital for treatment for a heart condition. Mr.Yar'Adua has not been seen in public since his return.
Mr. Jonathan assumed executive powers on February 9, ending months of uncertainty and a leadership vacuum, allowing him to push ahead with issues affecting Nigeria such as improving power supply, electoral reforms, reviving the economy and bringing peace and stability to the oil-producing Niger Delta.
Adeniyi dismisses suggestions that the return of President Yar'Adua threatens to drive the country into another constitutional crisis. He says Mr. Yar'Adu and Mr. Jonathan have had a very good working relationship.
"It is just one presidency; we are all under Dr. Goodluck Jonathan now as acting president and commander-in-chief, until the president returns," said Adeniyi. "They've always had cordial relationship. I also know for a fact that several times in council [at Cabinet meetings], when the president was presiding, he always said any time he was not around any memo should go to the acting president, then as the vice president."
Worried by the lack of information on the president and uncertainty about his health, many prominent Nigerians have called for President Yar'Adua to resign.
Somaliland’s Most Prominent Women: Edna Aden Ismail
HARGEISA, 27 February 2010 (Somalilandpress) – The Republic of Somaliland, a former British Protectorate, which has gained its independency from the British Colony in June 26, 1960, has declared to reclaim its independency in 1991 from the Somali Union, after a long struggle against the totalitarian regime of Mohamed Siyad Bare. Somaliland has since continued to impress the international community with such relentless efforts to secure the only stability that exists, today, in what was formerly known as Somalia. Although, Somaliland has, yet, to gain recognition as a sovereign state from any of the United Nations member states, many of these states has credited the people of Somaliland for their hard work and commitment. The stability and the gradual developments in many spheres in Somaliland's affairs are often described, by the international community, exemplary compared to that of Somalia and many other states in the Horn of Africa, today.
Any commendable achievement made by Somaliland has been, solely, achieved by the people of Somaliland. Somaliland women have, incontestably and immensely, contributed to these achievements. They say, every great man behind a great woman. Thank God, this small nation of, allegedly, less than three millions of populace, has so far produced many great women. Those great women deserve decoration for their contribution, and the likes of Edna should be honoured with a Noble Prize for her allegiance to humanitarian work.
Edna Adan Ismail is in the lead of those noble Somaliland women, who have made a viable difference in the slow, but improving political, social, economical, and cultural situations of Somaliland. Edna is a great role model to many young and aspiring Somaliland women, and I can only hope I have done her justice in the following paragraphs, where I am attempting to shed a light on what puts this lady ahead of the crowd.
Edna has shared platform with many world leaders and other important international figures such as former United States presidents Lyndon B. Johnson and Bill Clinton. Former United Nation's Secretary General Kofi Annan, and Hollywood mega stars Demi Moore, Goldie Hawn and many more. Edna, like her high-profile peers, can afford to have a Hollywood starlet lifestyle in any country of her choice. She can afford to live in New York suburbs, drive Bentley Continental, dine in posh and expensive eateries with her highly academic peers, and private shop in Paris's Faubourg Saint-Honoré district. But no, she did not choose that lifestyle. Instead, she chose to live in Hargeisa, Somalland's capital city, drive nothing fancier than what other Hargeisa's working class are driving. And on top of that, she, personally, deliveries babies at Edna Maternity Hospital. The hospital she founded and maintains herself with her own pension money, in Hargeisa. In an interview she gave at the BBC Radio 4, she told the presenter that her reason of founding Edna Maternity Hospital in Hargeisa and running it, is nothing more than just living up to an occupational commitment, i.e. she is a trained midwife, who has gained her skills at various hospitals in London, and therefore, this is, in her own words, "what she does for living".
Edna Adan Ismail must be the most accomplished woman in the Horn of Africa, and one of the few in the whole of African continent. She has many firsts in many things. She is the first Somaliland woman to receive a scholarship to United Kingdom, where she was trained as a midwife in 1950s. She is the first Somaliland and Somalia's First Lady as she was the wife of former Somalia's President in 1960s, Mohammed Haji Ibrahim Egal. The first Somaliland woman to held a driving licence, and as she told the BBC Radio 4 presenter the first Somali person to speak out of the Female Genital Mutilation (GFM) in 1975. Edna was the first woman Foreign Minister of the Republic of Somaliland from the periods of 2003 to 2006 and the only woman minister, then. She worked with the United Nations and has become the Regional Director of the World Health Organisation. She retired in early 1990s.
Edna Adan Ismail is reported to have receiving many tributes, so far, in her still ongoing humanitarian work. Edna was added to the list of the Medical Mission Hall of Fame in early 2007 by the University of Toledo, Ohio. This was in recognition of her lifelong Humanitarian work, and it gained her another first in her career life. Edna was the first African to have been awarded with such an honour. Furthermore, Edna received Honorary Doctoral Degree and Honorary Fellow from Clark University of Massachusetts in the United States and Cardiff University in the United Kingdom, respectively.
When speaking of this brilliant woman, people often tend to associate her with the late Somaliland president, Mohamed Haji Ibrahim Egal, as she was his first wife, or UDUP, the current ruling party in Somaliland, with whom she served as a Foreign Minister. However, many people, often, fail to appreciate that this noble woman has a lifelong achievements in humanitarian work. She is, first and foremost, qualified medical personnel and thus vowed to serve her country, regardless. Edna Maternity Hospital trains legions of young men and women in healthcare, every year. Many of those qualified men and women work in various health centres in the country, while others may choose to continue for further studies and trainings elsewhere. When Edna is not in Hargeisa, where she would not miss a delivery of a new baby, she travels around the world pleading with the international community to support Somaliland and, particularly, assist with the development of a better and sustainable healthcare system in the country.
This prominent woman has earned her place in history and is a true inspirational to all of us. Her humble self and noble efforts to help her people are amiable qualities that put her on top of the list that I have, personally, set to honour Somaliland's most prominent women.

Massive earthquake strikes Chile, 122 dead

By ALONSO SOTO | REUTERS
SANTIAGO: A huge magnitude-8.8 earthquake struck Chile early on Saturday, killing at least 122 people, knocking down homes and hospitals, and triggering a tsunami that rolled menacingly across the Pacific.
TV Chile reported that a 15-story building collapsed in the hardest-hit city of Concepcion, where buildings caught fire, major highway bridges collapsed and cracks opened up in the streets. Cars turned upside down lay scattered across one damaged bridge.
Residents huddled in streets full of rubble of masonry and glass from destroyed homes. Many were terrified by powerful aftershocks and desperately trying to call friends and family.
Chilean President-elect Sebastian Pinera said 122 people had been killed and the death toll could climb higher.
Tsunami warnings were posted around the Pacific, including the US state of Hawaii, Japan and Russia.
Telephone and power lines were down in much of central Chile, making it difficult to assess the full extent of the damage close to the epicenter.
Chile is the world's No. 1 copper producer, and the quake halted operations at two major mines.
"Never in my life have I experienced a quake like this, it's like the end of the world," one man told local television from the city of Temuco, where the quake damaged homes and forced staff to evacuate the regional hospital.
The US Geological Survey said the earthquake struck 70 miles (115 km) northeast of Concepcion at a depth of 22 miles (35 km) at 3:34 a.m. (0634 GMT).
The capital Santiago, about 200 miles (320 km) north of the epicenter, was also badly hit. The international airport was closed for at least 24 hours as the quake destroyed passenger walkways and shook glass out of doors and windows.
Chile's Codelco, the world's largest copper producer, suspended operations at its El Teniente and Andina mines, but reported no major damage and said it expected the mines to be up and running in the "coming hours." Production was halted at the Los Bronces and El Soldado copper mines, owned by Anglo American Plc, but Chile's biggest copper mine, Escondida, was operating normally.
Chile produces about 34 percent of world supply of copper, which is used in electronics, cars and refrigerators.
Tsunami
President Michelle Bachelet said a huge wave hit the Juan Fernandez islands. Radio stations reported serious damage on the archipelago, where Scottish sailor Alexander Selkirk was marooned in the 18th Century inspiring the novel Robinson Crusoe.
Bachelet, who flew over the worst-affected area, said residents were also being evacuated from coastal areas of Chile's remote Easter Island, a popular tourist destination in the Pacific famous for its towering Moai stone statues.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a Pacific-wide tsunami warning for countries in Latin America, and as far away as the US state of Hawaii as well as Japan, Russia, Philippines, Indonesia and the South Pacific. French Polynesia was also put on alert.
"Chile probably got the brunt force of the tsunami already.
So probably the worst has already happened in Chile," said Victor Sardina, geophysicist at the warning center.
"The tsunami was pretty big too. We reported some places around 8 feet. And it's quite possible it would be higher in other areas," he added.
An earthquake of magnitude 8 or over can cause "tremendous damage," the USGS says. The Jan. 12 quake that devastated Haiti's capital Port-au-Prince was measured as magnitude 7.0.
Bachelet urged people to stay calm and to remain at home to avoid road accidents. "With a quake of this size we undoubtedly can't rule out more deaths and probably injuries," she said.
Flames, looting
Local television showed a building in flames in Concepcion, one of Chile's largest cities with around 670,000 inhabitants.
Some residents looted pharmacies and a collapsed grains silo, hauling off bags of wheat, television images showed.
Broken glass and chunks of concrete and brick were strewn across roads and several strong aftershocks rattled jittery residents in the hours after the initial quake.
In the moments after the quake, people streamed onto the streets of the Chilean capital hugging each other and crying.
"My house is completely destroyed, everything fell over ...
it has been totally destroyed. Me and wife huddled in a corner and after hours they rescued us," said one elderly man in central Santiago.
There were blackouts in parts of Santiago. Emergency officials said buildings in the historic quarters of two southern cities had been badly damaged and local radio said three hospitals had partially collapsed.
In 1960, Chile was hit by the world's biggest earthquake since records dating back to 1900. The 9.5 magnitude quake devastated the south-central city of Valdivia, killing 1,655 people and sending a tsunami which battered Easter Island 2,300 miles (3,700 km) off Chile's Pacific seaboard and continued as far as Hawaii, Japan and the Philippines.
Saturday's quake shook buildings as far away as Argentina's Andean provinces of Mendoza and San Juan. A series of strong aftershocks rocked Chile's coastal region from Valdivia in the south to Valparaiso, about 500 miles (800 km) to the north.
The United Nations and the White House said they were closely monitoring the situation in Chile and the potential threat of tsunamis in the Pacific.
A State Department official said Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was being kept apprised of the situation in Chile, which she is due to visit on Tuesday on a Latin American tour.

Prophet Muhammad - 1: Away from extreme views
By ADIL SALAHI | ARAB NEWS
Perhaps no historical character has been subjected to vile criticism, false accusations and fabricated assertions by his opponents than Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Yet no one has been the recipient of more profound and genuine love and respect than him.
Both love and hostility linger on, and are nurtured despite the fact that 14 centuries have passed since Muhammad had departed this world. Neither feeling would have lingered had Muhammad been an ordinary person, or had his contribution to human life been of temporary nature.
Today we see both feelings surfacing in different ways and shapes, in areas of our world that are wide apart, and among people of different races, cultures, beliefs and life perspectives. Books like Salman Rushdie's Satanic Verses, the Danish cartoons, as well as videos and websites dedicated to attack Islam and its Prophet are manifestations of the hostile trend. The large demonstrations that swept the Muslim world against such productions symbolize the deep seated love Muslims feel toward Muhammad, God's last messenger.
Yet both types of manifestation are extreme, held by small sections of Muslims and non-Muslims. Before the beginning of the 21st century, the great majority of non-Muslims did not take much interest in Islam or its Prophet, despite sustained efforts, over the last third of the 20th century, to distort the image of Islam and to associate it with terrorism. On the other hand, most Muslims today follow the traditional way in their approach to their faith and to the man who delivered its divine message.
Extreme tendencies are hardly appropriate in any generation, let alone in our modern world with its easy and varied ways of communication. By nature, they remain confined within certain areas and among small communities. However, they sometimes acquire a self-energizing force that gives them speedily increasing momentum, and they can stage sweeping revolutions. The end result is almost always a negative one.
When we study the history of Islam and the life of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), we clearly see that his approach was a very moderate one, seeking to win hearts and influence minds and ways of thinking. He never promised anyone any type of material gain. He never sought to achieve supremacy for any class, race, tribe or community. Even the least privileged individual was, to him, a person who had every right to learn of God's message and to make a choice whether to accept or reject it.
Muhammad's community is described in the Qur'an as 'the middle community', to stress its central role in the life of humanity and its moderate approach. Yet Islam is uncompromising in establishing the truth and defending it. It accepts no injustice, no matter who is the perpetrator. It tells its followers that they must always maintain justice, even with their enemies: "Believers, be steadfast in your devotion to God, bearing witness to the truth in all equity. Never allow your hatred of any people to lead you away from justice. Be just, this is closer to righteousness." (5: 8)
Steering away from all types of extremity, we will be publishing a series of articles that highlight the true character of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). We hope that this will help our non-Muslim readers to understand our view of him. It will also help Muslims to formulate a better understanding of God's last messenger and why they should follow his guidance in all aspects of life.

Krug Shares About Life in Somaliland
Krug Shares About Life in Somaliland
Teresa Krug, a 2003 Heber Springs High graduate, is an English teacher in Somaliland in the eastern horn of Africa. She has been there since October 2009. She was originally supposed to teach English and journalism to university students, but since January she has been teaching English at the secondary school of Abaarso Tech (an advanced high school) to freshmen and local police and customs officers.
Krug is the director of communications and is in charge of outreach to media outlets. She was asked to give readers an insight into what life is like in Somaliland. More information about Abaarso Tech and her experiences can be found at www.abaarsotech.org and www.smilinginsomaliland.com.
My mornings begin with a classroom of 14 freshmen. Together we rehearse the different parts of speech, review capitalization, and spend time with famous literary characters. My students face me in dark blue uniforms, and I instruct in a hideously flowered 'teacher dress.' This scene closely resembles any boarding school classroom in the United States, save one notable part: my hair and exposed neck are wrapped in brightly colored scarves.
The total freshman class is composed of roughly 50 students. They are the first to go through Abaarso Tech, a secondary boarding school in East Africa that was founded by an American in 2008. The students, who are in the top one percent of their peer group of Somaliland, are admitted regardless of their abilities to pay. As a whole, however, they still lag far behind their peers in more developed parts of the world.
Previous to enrollment many of our students had never seen a computer, and the majority lacked the fundamental conceptual and analytical skills my classmates and I developed as children. While we spent time with board games, theater, debate, and other foundational activities, these students' education focused more on memorization and housework. In addition to advanced science and math classes, these teenagers are now also being exposed to logic and arts education for the very first time.
The educational downfall is just one side effect of this post-conflict society. (Somaliland unilaterally separated from its 1960 union with southern Somalia in 1991 after a violent civil war.) Many Somalis, the majority of which either lived in refugee camps or abroad during the war, are still suffering from undiagnosed post-traumatic stress disorder. The political and healthcare systems are still tremendously underdeveloped, and books are severely lacking. Because little printing takes place here, and shipping is extremely expensive, it is common for classes to be taught without enough—or any—of them.
What the country lacks in material resources, however, it makes up for in committed, optimistic individuals who are determined to see Somaliland succeed. Despite the international community's reluctance to acknowledge it as a separate country, hospitals are being built, universities are being strengthened, and students are attacking education with an insatiable hunger.
As difficult as it has been to lose much of my independence to armed guards and shared drivers, I find it increasingly difficult to walk away from this country. I am reminded daily of Heber Springs in the people I meet: generous, religious, largely homogenous, strong familial ties, and gentle, teasing senses of humor. I am also reminded of the lessons I learned here—both in and out of school—as I apply them every day with my students.
I know the capability to see my friends and family in Somaliland has enabled the struggles of Somalis to become more personal. My hope is that others, despite their physical location, will also be able to personalize their struggles.

Yemen: Yemen denies rumor that the U.S. is opening facilities on Socotra; al Houthi rebels continue to be uncooperative in implementing the ceasefire; the Pentagon approved $150 million in military assistance; small arms dealers moving underground
Horn of Africa: Somali President pleads for international assistance; al Shabaab militants killed in Mogadishu explosion; Hizb al Islam denies involvement in Mogadishu explosion; Ahlu Sunna wa al Jama'a clerics hold meeting with TFG forces
Yemen Security Brief
- Yemeni Foreign Minister Abu Bakr al Qirbi has denied that Yemen signed an agreement with the United States allowing it to establish facilities on the island of Socotra. Al Qirbi stated "The U.S. should act in the way it serves its interest and others' interest."[1]
- Al Houthi rebels reportedly continue to impede the implementation of a ceasefire agreement with the Yemeni government by postponing the opening of important roads, slowly eliminating landmines, and keeping captive the two remaining Saudi soldiers and Yemeni military and civilians. At this time, the Yemeni Supreme Security Committee views the al Houthis as uncommitted to the ceasefire.[2]
- The Pentagon approved $150 million in military assistance to Yemen. This amount more than doubles Yemen's aid from last year, $67 million. The current package is intended to pay for military equipment and training for Yemeni security forces.[3]
- Arms dealers in local markets have been moving sales underground in response to theYemeni government's implementation of tougher restrictions on sales. Arms dealers now open their shops with no merchandise displayed, but will sell weapons and ammunition to buyers at their homes. Abdurrahman al-Marwani, chairman of local NGO Dar al Salam (House of Peace), which works against armed violence and arms proliferation, stated there are more than 300 arms shops in Yemen.[4]
Horn of Africa Security Brief
- Somali President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed made a troubling announcement signifying the level of fragility of the state of Somalia. President Ahmed stated "My government has no powers; we need international support to restore law and order in Somalia." Despite President Ahmed signaling the inefficiency and weakness of his government, he acknowledges it is his and the government's responsibility to restore peace in Somalia.[5]
- An explosion occurred in Mogadishu killing at least six people, three of whom were al Shabaab militants. The explosions were caused by two landmines which went off at the Bar Ubax intersection near the al Shabaab controlled Bakara market. A resident, who claimed anonymity, stated they were not sure who was behind the explosion because the area is controlled by Islamist forces.[6]
- Hizb al Islam held a press conference stating they did not have any involvement in the Bakara market explosion in Mogadishu which killed three al Shabaab Islamists.[7]
- Ahlu Sunna wa al Jama'a clerics held a meeting with top TFG officials in Mogadishu. Sheik Omar Mohamed Farah, central Somali clerical chairman, stated their objective "Is to unite the clerics of Ahlu Sunna wa al Jama'a in central and southern Somalia, Puntland, and Somaliland to start a crackdown" on activities harmful to the people and the country.[8]
